{"id":784,"date":"2022-08-25T17:32:06","date_gmt":"2022-08-25T17:32:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.tarleton.edu\/payroll\/?page_id=784"},"modified":"2025-07-22T19:18:29","modified_gmt":"2025-07-22T19:18:29","slug":"fica","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/human-resources\/employees\/payroll\/fica\/","title":{"rendered":"Student FICA Exemption"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Beginning July 1, 2000, student workers employed by Members of The Texas A&amp;M University System will be exempt from Social Security (OASI) and Medicare (OAHI) taxes if they meet these requirements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Enrolled at least half-time (unless it is the student&#8217;s last semester and the student is enrolled in the number of credit hours needed to complete the requirements for obtaining a degree. The student must provide the Payroll Office with written verification from the Registrar&#8217;s Office of this status for the exemption to be available if enrolled less than half time the final semester).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be a non-career employee (not eligible for retirement benefits).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<table class=\"wp-block-advgb-table advgb-table-frontend\"><tbody><tr><td>Classification<\/td><td>Spring\/Fall Enrollment<\/td><td>Summer Enrollment*<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Undergraduate<\/td><td>6<\/td><td>6<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Graduate<\/td><td>4.5<\/td><td>6<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"information has-texan-white-color has-tarleton-purple-background-color has-text-color has-background\">*To be exempt from OASI &amp; OAHI tax for the entire summer, you must be a qualified student for the entire summer, generally 3 hours enrollment for Summer I and 3 hours enrollment for Summer II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Non-resident Alien Students<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To receive an exemption, the identifying number a student is enrolled under in the Registrar&#8217;s Office must match the Social Security Number on file in the Human Resources &amp; Payroll offices. Non-resident alien students sometimes enroll under a temporary number that does not match the Social Security number on their hiring paperwork. As soon as a Social Security Number has been received, students must provide a copy of the card to the Registrar&#8217;s Office and ask that their enrollment records be updated to include the SSN.
