What is a Fraternity or a Sorority?<\/h4><\/div>
\n

A fraternity\/sorority is a group of men or women bound together by brotherhood or sisterhood and common goals and aspirations. The members that form a fraternity or sorority share their efforts, friendship, and knowledge. Together these members learn, grow and make the Greek organization stronger. Their common experience builds ties that last a lifetime. This forms a brotherhood or sisterhood amongst members which helps to develop strong and creative leadership leading to success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though there are many different fraternities and sororities, they all share common founding principles. Greek organizations enhance your educational experience by emphasizing intellectual, interpersonal, and social development. The ideals of lifelong friendship, sound education, campus and community service, and social interaction are what Greek members strive to live by every day.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Are fraternities just like those on TV and in movies?<\/h4><\/div>

Every fraternity is different and unique. The images portrayed in the movies and on TV shows do not reflect those attitudes at Tarleton State University. Our Greek students represent a variety of ethnic, economic and social backgrounds. Students of all majors and interests are affiliated with a fraternity or sorority. One of the greatest aspects of Greek Life is that each chapter offers something different to each member.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

What is Rush\/Recruitment?<\/h4><\/div>

Recruitment is the time when Sororities and Fraternities seek and recruit new members. The recruitment events are at different times for men and for women. Recruitment is a time when students have an opportunity to visit the groups and see what each has to offer. Recruitment information can be obtained through the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life. Please call 254-968-9490<\/a> or email Greek Life at Tarleton.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

If I go through recruitment, do I have to join?<\/h4><\/div>

No. Recruitment is a time to see what Greek life can offer you. Going through Recruitment and its functions does not commit you to joining.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Don’t Greek organizations take up a lot of time?<\/h4><\/div>
\n

Fraternity\/Sorority membership requires anywhere from 2 to 8 hours a week. Whether it be a community service project, planning an event, or regular weekly meetings, Greek members have learned to manage their time wisely with other commitments such as schoolwork, a job, and significant others. This is why so many members have succeeded in their lives.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

What is the financial obligation?<\/h4><\/div>
\n

Like any opportunity for involvement in college, there is a financial commitment associated with joining a sorority. The costs go towards International\/National fees, chapter operating expenses, philanthropy events, social functions and much more! Financial obligations differ among individual chapters. New members can expect to pay higher dues their first semester for the one time new member fees. Semester dues average between $150-300. The fraternities and sororities are easy to work with on a certain dues schedule if needed.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

How will my student benefit from joining a fraternity or sorority?<\/h4><\/div>

These organizations are rooted in four founding values that foster academic achievement, student involvement, community service, and life-long friendships. Greek organizations are groups of men or women who come together to form a personal network of individuals with similar ideas, interests, and a mutual pursuit of a well-rounded college education. Advantages include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. A support group to help make the adjustment to college easier.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Scholastic resources to help students achieve their academic goals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Leadership skills acquired through hands-on experience.<\/li>\n\n\n\n

    What is membership recruitment?<\/h4><\/div>
    \n

    Membership in a fraternity or sorority is voluntary and is the result of mutual selection. Formal recruitment is a time set aside, usually once a year, for fraternity and sorority members and unaffiliated women to become better acquainted. Continuous informal recruitment also occurs on some campuses throughout the school year. Offers of membership during informal recruitment may occur at any time during the process of getting acquainted<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

    How will joining a Greek organization affect my student’s academic pursuits?<\/h4><\/div>

    Sororities serve as a great resource for students academically through study hours and tutoring programs. Most chapters require a high GPA for initial membership into the chapter and they often regulate study hours, maintain resource files, reward those who do well and help those with difficulties. The Panhellenic Council supports academic excellence by promoting academic programming and spotlighting exceptional women in \u201cAround the Circle,\u201d the Panhellenic newsletter distributed each month.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

    What is my role as a parent?<\/h4><\/div>

    Be supportive and learn as much as you can by asking questions of your son or daughter prior to and throughout the membership recruitment process.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

    What are the social aspects of fraternity or sorority membership?<\/h4><\/div>

    Because the Greek community at Tarleton contributes to the social activity on campus, it has taken great strides toward creating a responsible and safe environment for its members. All fraternities and sororities have risk management programs dictated by their National Organizations. All Greek organizations are held accountable to the Tarleton State University Student Code of Conduct and all local and State Laws.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

    Is hazing a part of the Greek culture at Tarleton State University?<\/h4><\/div>
    \n

    Tarleton State University has a zero-tolerance policy regarding hazing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Hazing is any intentional or reckless act, on or off University property, by one student, acting alone or with others, which is directed against any other student, that endangers the mental or physical health or safety of that student, or which induces or coerces a student to endanger his or her mental or physical health of safety; prohibited conduct is limited to actions taken and situations created in connection with initiation into an affiliation with any organization and does not include participation in customary athletic events or similar contests or competition. Accomplices and bystanders of hazing could be name in a civil or criminal action involving any type of hazing activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Does being a member of a Greek-letter organization have benefits after graduation?<\/h4><\/div>
    \n

    Greek membership is a lifelong commitment. Once you are an initiated member, you remain a member for life. As such, each national organization has an extensive alumni network. As you know, in today’s job market, it is not only important what you know, but who you know. Being a fraternity or sorority member means having an immediate connection with thousands of other members. There are many successful Greek alumni all over the country who are always looking to hire the best and the brightest that our Greek community has to offer. In addition, there are alumni groups or graduate chapters that operate in most cities and metropolitan areas across the country. If you find yourself in a new city, you can start your networking with your sisters in the local alumnae group.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
