{"id":870,"date":"2021-07-02T09:27:19","date_gmt":"2021-07-02T14:27:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.tarleton.edu\/giving\/?p=870"},"modified":"2021-07-09T13:14:42","modified_gmt":"2021-07-09T18:14:42","slug":"a-real-desire-to-help","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/giving\/2021\/07\/02\/a-real-desire-to-help\/","title":{"rendered":"A Real Desire to Help"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tarleton Office of Diversity, Inclusion and International Programs Named for Longs&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It began&nbsp;with&nbsp;good intentions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Good intentions&nbsp;that&nbsp;have&nbsp;resulted in&nbsp;more than $150&nbsp;million donated in support of education&nbsp;and nonprofits&nbsp;in the&nbsp;state.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Teresa \u201cTerry\u201d Long and her husband,&nbsp;Joe,&nbsp;were&nbsp;teachers at Alice High School when they met.&nbsp;From the earliest days of their marriage&nbsp;more than six decades ago, they were dedicated champions for education, medicine and the performing and fine arts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy wife and I both have a deep passion for education at all levels, as it has allowed us to enjoy great success in many different fields,\u201d&nbsp;Joe&nbsp;said.\u202f\u201cEducation has been the cornerstone of our success,&nbsp;and we are very grateful for the many opportunities it has given us.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their latest giving was a $2&nbsp;million&nbsp;donation&nbsp;earlier this year&nbsp;to&nbsp;benefit&nbsp;underrepresented students at Tarleton&nbsp;State University.&nbsp;In response, Tarleton named the&nbsp;Office of Diversity, Inclusion and International Programs in&nbsp;their&nbsp;honor.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/giving\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/07\/Joe-Teresa-Long-Gift_1394-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"A group of people standing in front of a wall with a man holding up plaque.\" class=\"wp-image-876\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/giving\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/07\/Joe-Teresa-Long-Gift_1394-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/giving\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/07\/Joe-Teresa-Long-Gift_1394-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/giving\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/07\/Joe-Teresa-Long-Gift_1394-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/giving\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/07\/Joe-Teresa-Long-Gift_1394-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/giving\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/07\/Joe-Teresa-Long-Gift_1394-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis wonderful couple have spent their lives supporting educational access,\u201d said Tarleton President James Hurley. \u201cIt is fitting that their legacy will forever be associated with our commitment to a culture of equity and opportunity for all.&nbsp;We are excited for the opportunities this gift will provide&nbsp;our underrepresented students.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to scholarships, the&nbsp;Longs&nbsp;also&nbsp;created an endowed chair in the social sciences. Their&nbsp;most recent gift will support study abroad and research opportunities for students who otherwise might not have the chance to earn a university degree.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Diversity and inclusion punctuated the life of&nbsp;Joe\u2019s&nbsp;beloved Terry \u2014 the first&nbsp;Latina&nbsp;to earn a doctorate at the University of Texas at Austin \u2014 and she&nbsp;was&nbsp;an integral part of the couple\u2019s&nbsp;generosity toward&nbsp;Tarleton. She passed away in March at 92.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joe, 91, earned his associate degree at what was then John Tarleton Agricultural College&nbsp;before&nbsp;transferring&nbsp;to UT for his bachelor\u2019s and juris doctorate. The couple received honorary doctorates of humane letters during Tarleton\u2019s spring 2012 commencement ceremonies.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their investment in&nbsp;Tarleton began with a $1 million gift that established&nbsp;the Joe R. and Teresa L. Long Endowed Scholarship supporting students in the College of Education and Human Development, College of Liberal and Fine Arts, and College of Science and Technology.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More&nbsp;than 70 Tarleton students annually receive&nbsp;these&nbsp;scholarships.
