{"id":2082,"date":"2024-04-18T17:48:22","date_gmt":"2024-04-18T17:48:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/finaid\/?page_id=2082"},"modified":"2024-12-04T18:38:19","modified_gmt":"2024-12-04T18:38:19","slug":"unusual-circumstance-appeal","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/finaid\/unusual-circumstance-appeal\/","title":{"rendered":"Unusual Circumstance Appeal"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unusual Circumstance Appeal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you indicated \u201cyes\u201d to the question in the <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/help\/unusual-circumstances\">Student Unusual Circumstance<\/a> portion of FAFSA, you are considered \u201cprovisionally independent\u201d. This designation means that you are not required to provide parental information on your FAFSA; however, the institution is required to review your circumstance to make a formal determination on your dependency status through an Unusual Circumstance Appeal. In this situation, the financial aid office will contact you to complete the appeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, if your circumstances change and meet one of the criteria below, you may contact a financial aid counselor at 254-968-9070 or <a href=\"mailto:FINAID@tarleton.edu\">FINAID@tarleton.edu<\/a> to discuss if you are eligible for this appeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Unusual circumstances include (but are not limited to):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Human trafficking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Legally granted refugee or asylum status<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Parental abandonment or estrangement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Student or parental incarceration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>However, unusual circumstances do not include the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Parents refuse to contribute to the student\u2019s education<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Parents will not provide information for the FAFSA or verification<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Parents do not claim the student as a dependent for income tax purposes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Student demonstrates total self-sufficiency<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If a financial aid counselor deems that you are eligible for this appeal, they will open the \u201cProfessional Judgment: Unusual Circumstance Appeal\u201d for you on the StudentForms website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must complete a FAFSA or TASFA prior to requesting this appeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your appeal is approved, you will be assumed as an independent student for subsequent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Supporting Documentation may include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a documented interview between the student and the financial aid administrator<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>submission of a court order or official federal or state documentation that the student or student\u2019s parents or legal guardians are incarcerated<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a documented phone call or written statement, which confirms the unusual circumstances with<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a state, county or tribal welfare agency<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an independent living case worker who supports current and former foster youth with the transition to adulthood<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a public or private agency, facility, or program servicing the victims of abuse, neglect, assault, or violence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a documented phone call or written statement from an attorney, guardian ad litem, a court-appointed special advocate (or similar), or a representative of a TRIO or GEAR UP program which confirms the circumstances and the person\u2019s relationship to the student<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a documented determination of independence made by a financial aid administrator at another institution in the same or a prior award year<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>utility bills, health insurance, or other documents that demonstrate a separation from parents or legal guardians<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unusual Circumstance Appeal If you indicated \u201cyes\u201d to the question in the Student Unusual Circumstance portion of FAFSA, you are considered \u201cprovisionally independent\u201d.
