Customized Verification Requirement

The Department of Education selects at random FAFSA records that require verification. The data elements reported on the FAFSA that the Tarleton State University Financial Aid Office must confirm to be accurate are specific to the student applicants. For example Student A is dependent and his family files taxes. He may be asked to:

  • Confirm the accuracy of reported adjusted gross income(s)
  • Confirm U.S. income taxes paid
  • Confirm untaxed portions of IRA distributions
  • Confirm untaxed portions of pensions (typically parents)
  • Confirm IRA deductions and payments
  • Confirm tax-exempt interest income
  • Confirm education credits
  • Confirm the number in the household
  • Confirm the number in college
  • Confirm receipt/non-receipt of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits
  • Confirm child support paid

Student B may be requested to only provide:

  • Proof of high school completion status
  • An identity/statement of educational purpose ( a statement attesting to the fact that the federal student aid received will be used to pay educationally related expenses)
  • A confirmation of receipt/non-receipt  of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits
  • Proof of payment/non-payment of child support

As you can see the documentation requested of one student may be very different than that which is requested from another.

IRS Data Retrieval System

The IRS Data Retrieval Tool can be used to complete the income section of the FAFSA. If you, and/or your parents are federal tax filer(s) please file your 2013 income tax return(s) electronically and as early as possible. This will facilitate the use of the IRS Data Retrieval Tool when completing the 2014-2015 FAFSA. It will also minimize the need to obtain a Tax Transcript from the IRS should your FAFSA be selected for verification.
