Exploring a Possible Move to Division I Athletics

Tarleton State University

The possibility of Tarleton State University moving up from Division II Intercollegiate Athletics (DII) competition to Division I (DI) has been a topic of discussion for the past few years. Such a move would have a major impact on the university including, but not limited to the commitment of financial resources, increased level of competition, and national visibility. Find out more about NCAA Divisional Differences.

To explore the issues involved, Tarleton's Dr. F. Dominic Dottavio assembled a special task force with broad university representation. The work of the task force took place in the latter months of 2017 and early months of 2018.

Task Force Responsibilities

The charge of the task force was to provide an objective, unbiased assessment that can help the University reach the most informed decision about what is best for Tarleton, if the Universtiy receives an invite from a DI athletic conference.

To fulfill its responsibilities, the Task Force:

  • Engaged in conversations with and asked for questions from the Faculty Senate, Student Government Association, Staff Council, and University Budget Council,
  • Created this webpage for the sharing of information and the solicitation of questions,
  • Held an open forum featuring special guests who shared their experiences and insights (view the video below),
  • Conducted a survey with faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, and community members (see Survey Results in the navigation),
  • Worked with Tarleton Athletics to obtain an updated transition plan (see Transition Plan - Updated 12.21.17 in navigation),
  • Received over 200 questions and provided answers to those it could (see FAQ in the navigation),
  • Performed a financial assessment (see Situation Analysis in the navigation),
  • Performed a budget analysis (see Budget Considerations in the navigation),
  • Received position statements from Tarleton's Student Government Association, Athletic Council, and Texan Club (see navigation), and
  • Submitted its report to President Dottavio and the Executive Cabinet (see Task Force Report in the navigation).
