What is Accounting?

Accounting is a versatile degree, and students who major in accounting are well-prepared to meet the demands of today's challenging and competitive workforce. Our program at Tarleton is one of the most affordable bachelor's in accounting degree programs in Texas.

Accounting is the study and practice of recording, analyzing and reporting financial transactions to determine the financial health of a business, including profit, cash flow and value. Accountants serve an important role in making business decisions.

What Can You Do With Your Bachelor's Degree in Accounting?

The bachelor's in accounting is a versatile undergraduate degree that provides a wide variety of career opportunities for graduates. You could work in public accounting, financial institutions, government accounting or nonprofit organizations. You may also qualify for a variety of jobs in many business-related areas, including sales, production management, client management, product development, procurement, general management, banking and financial planning. A bachelor's in accounting degree can be useful for entrepreneurs and business owners, such as physicians who want to run a private practice, as well.

Our accredited bachelor’s in accounting degree program has one of the highest CPA exam pass rates in Texas. For 2019, Tarleton accountants achieved a 58% pass rate, significantly higher than the national average of about 54%.

Prepare to work in today's digital world

Our online program curriculum is engaging and interactive, with instructional videos, one-on-one video sessions, collaboration with faculty to work through course material and solve problems, small group work and conference calls with peers. The online degree program uses technology and tools you will work with on the job. Manufacturing and industrial management majors can also download CAD software for free.

Get help paying for college

Many of our undergraduate students are able to get help from their employers through tuition reimbursement. We offer a limited number of undergraduate student scholarships through the Department of Engineering Technology. You may also qualify for private or university scholarships and federal financial aid.


What Classes Will You Take as an Accounting Major?

Our bachelor's and master's degree programs provide courses recognized by the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy in accounting/tax research and analysis, as well as accounting/business communications. BBA in accounting program courses fulfill 120 of the 150 required hours for students preparing to sit for the CPA exam to become certified public accountants.

Through the program coursework, you'll develop skills needed to work in a variety of settings, from government auditing to small business tax law, while developing your personal ethical philosophy based on moral, ethical and imperative questions that are applicable in the accounting profession.

Our program curriculum provides an exciting, interactive and demanding course of study using current principles, practices and tools such as spreadsheets and general ledger software commonly used in businesses. Featuring high-demand content areas, course topics include governmental and not-for-profit accounting, accounting information systems, ethics for accountants and more. The remaining 30 hours can be completed through additional undergraduate courses or the MAcc program.

Transfer Into or Out of a Community College

Our program coursework is highly compatible with accountancy programs at other schools, particularly community colleges such as McLennan County, Tarrant County, Navarro County and Tyler. This helps students transfer into and out of Tarleton. In a recent period, Tarleton had one of the highest graduation rates among transfer students, according to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
