How to Help

Before an Attempt:

Warning signs of suicide demand immediate action:

  • Announcing that the person has made a plan
  • Talking or writing about suicide or death
  • Saying things like: I wish I were dead. What’s the point of living?
  • Isolating rather than hanging out with friends
  • Expressing the belief that life is meaningless
  • Giving away prized possessions
  • Neglecting his or her appearance and hygiene
  • Obtaining a weapon or another means

Ask directly. Call for help.

Be prepared:

If you are thinking of hurting yourself, tell someone who can help. If you cannot talk to your parents, find someone else: a relative, friend, roommate, RL, professor, counselor, or other staff.

If you experience distress related to personal or professional matters, tell someone who can help. if you are a student, reach out to Student Counseling Services. If you are a parent, reach out for help in your area, or call SCS for a consultation. If you are faculty or staff, there are free and confidential resources are available to employees. Reach out to SCS for consultation and ask employee services about these resources. 

After an Attempt

Encourage and engage in self-care which includes:

  • Getting rest and exercise
  • Eating and hydrating properly
  • Avoid use and/or increased use of alcohol and other substances
  • Re-establish routines as soon as possible
  • Seek out supportive people
  • Ask for help

Support someone who has lost a loved one to suicide:

  • Encourage self-care
  • Provide support for normal grief process
  • Connect impacted students to Student Counseling Services and Student Counseling Services if needed.

Be aware of the risk of contagion, especially for high-risk students:

  • Were eyewitnesses to the death
  • Family members or close friends of the deceased (including siblings, teammates, classmates, and acquaintances)
  • Received a phone call, text, or other communication from the deceased foretelling the suicide
  • May have fought with or bullied the deceased
  • Are dealing with stressful affairs events
  • Have a history of suicide attempt
