The Engaged Faculty Award is given in recognition of exemplary engaged civic student learning and leadership by a faculty member. “A faculty member’s commitment to teach with an institution(s). Factors influencing ongoing commitment and affiliation include: (a) training, (b) support, (c) technical assistance, (d) information exchange, and assessment” (Hagner, January, 2001, p.2).

Award Criteria

Faculty contributions can be grouped into three areas namely at the University level, College and Departmental level, Service to the Profession and Service to the community. Examples of each of these areas are given below.

Civic-learning Service to the Profession:

  • Facilitate student case studies in community-based organizations such as the American Legion; Cross Timbers Business & Professional Women’s Club;
  • Facilitate in civic-based organizations including the Lion’s Club; Leadership and
  • Organizing agriculture business livestock and farming educational events.

Service to the Community:

  • Civic Involvement – involve in Chambers, Independent School Districts,
  • Serving in Civic Groups such as City Councils, Planning & Zoning Commission, Board of Adjustment;
  • Membership and interactions in organizations such as Lions Club, Rotary Club;
  • Active participation in university and/or college fund raising;
  • Participating in activities of Faith Based Organizations such as Churches, Mosques, Synagogues and Temples;
  • Community involvement such as Meals-on-Wheels, CASA, food pantries;
  • Scholarly Practitioners (SP) sustain currency relevance through continued professional experience, engagement related to their professional background and experience;
  • Instructional Practitioners (IP) sustain relevance through continued professional experience and engagement related to their professional backgrounds and experience.

Professional activities include the following: 

  • Business and leadership consulting;
  • Professional certification that applies to teaching field;
  • Software development based on use and availability;
  • Operating a business or owning a firm;
  • Board membership with decision making responsibility; and
  • Practical experience in field.
