Barry B. Thompson Service Award

The Barry B. Thompson’s Service award is given annually to a faculty member in recognition of outstanding service to students, the campus community, and significant contributions to student-faculty interactions outside the classroom. Faculty contributions can be grouped into four areas namely at the University level, College and Departmental level, Service to the Profession and Service to the community. Examples of each of these areas are given below:

Award Criteria

The University Level 

  • University level committee, councils. More credit will be given if there is a defined role in the committee or if an applicant is the Chair of the Committee;
  • University led Task Forces. More credit will be given if there is a defined role in the Task Force or if an applicant is the Chair of the Task Force;
  • Member of Ad-Hoc Committees;
  • Participation in the Faculty Fellows Program – Teaching, Research or Service;
  • University-wide Assessment Programs; and
  • Representing the University for System-wide conferences. 

College and Departmental Levels: 

  • Member of Ad-Hoc Committees;
  • Program Coordinator for degree programs;
  • Participation in Curriculum or Program Development;
  • Serving as a Faculty Advisor for student organizations – discipline specific or other areas across the university;
  • More credit will be given if an applicant establishes a new organization at the departmental, college or university levels;
  • Sponsoring Honor Societies in discipline or at the college level (DMD) or at the University level;
  • Participation in Assessments at the college level (AOL);
  • More credit will be given if an applicant is a program coordinator;
  • Teaching on Multiple campuses to support program;
  • Teaching both face-to-face and online formats;
  • Teaching Writing Intensive (WI) designated courses; and
  • Identifying and working with students in Internship programs.

Service to the Profession:

  • Membership in professional organizations; 
  • Holding officers position in professional organizations;
  • Organizing conferences, tracks and serving on organizing committees;
  • More credit will be given to those that are responsible for organizing conferences;
  • Serving as a Session Chair and Discussant at conferences;
  • Member of committees in professional organization;
  • Serving on the Editorial Board of refereed journals; and
  • Reviewing papers for refereed journals.

Service to the Community: 

  • Civic Involvement – involve in Chambers, ISD’s;
  • Serving in Civic Groups such as City Councils, Planning & Zoning Commission, Board of Adjustment;
  • Membership and interactions in organizations such as Lions Club, Rotary Club;
  • Active participation in university and/or college fund raising;
  • Participating in activities of Faith Based Organizations such as Churches, Mosques, Synagogues and Temples; and
  • Community involvement such as Meals-on-Wheels, CASA, food pantries.
