How to Build a Webpage

Building a webpage in Cascade CMS is easy when you consider your pages can now be modular. That is, your page is made up of the template your website was built in (Stacked or Right Navigation), the Content Module blocks that create the major portion of the layout, and the components (or molecules) that make up the specific sections of the content.

Step 1: Brainstorm

Since “Content is King,” you should check out the Content Strategy portion of the tutorial website to get an idea of how to stage, or lay out, your message using the content you have (and the content you will need to update regularly).

Step 2: Copy from Yourself

You need one of your one webpages to create a new webpage, so you can keep your website’s settings.

  1. Copy one of your webpages.
  2. Make sure it is in the correct folder of your website, not an _underscore, documents, forms, or images folder.
  3. Make sure it has a good SEO friendly system name.
  4. In the same area, copy one of your _underscore folders. It can be the same as the one you copied the webpage for.
  5. Make sure it has the same system name as your webpage, along with the “_” appended to the front.

Step 3: Copy from Yourself or Others

You may already have a good starting point with a Content Module block, or you found a cool one someone else has. Make sure you are taking from someone with the same template as your website is using before making a copy of the Content Module block. Then place it inside the _underscore folder you created. Also delete any Content Module Blocks you don't need on the new page.

Step 4: Tweak that Content Module Block

Now that you have a copy of that cool Content Module block, you can tweak it for your own use. Delete what you don’t need and replace it with what you do. If you make a mistake, make another copy of the Content Module block from the original, and see where you need to keep something that you accidentally deleted.

Step 5: Add, Repeat, and Rearrange

You may have one Content Module block on a page or more. To add them, Edit the webpage you created, and go down to where the blocks are listed out for the page.

  • Select a block in the listing to change it out to another Content Module block.
  • Use the + and x buttons to add and remove blocks.
  • Use the up arrow and down arrow buttons to reorder the blocks.

Step 6: Ask for Web Service's Assistance (Optional)

Can’t place a video on a module? Need to embed a graphic or form? Become an active user of a new social media account that has been approved by the Social Media Coordinator? New phone number for the department? Use the Computer Helpdesk Ticket System to request content be added or updated to a specific area of your website. We’ll let you know if you need to take additional steps before the content is approved to be published.

Step 7: Check your Metadata

  1. Does it need to be included in the right hand navigation? Make sure it is selected, if yes!
  2. Is the Display Name short and sweet for use in the navigation?
  3. Does the Breadcrumb need to be different from the right navigation Display Name because it is an index page in a sub folder?
  4. Is the Page Title unique and also define where it is located in your website?
  5. Besides the (more important) keywords in the content of your page, do you have keywords you need to add to be more SEO friendly? Description for the search engines to use?

Step 8: Reorder Your Navigation (Optional)

If you have the Right Navigation template and you are adding a webpage to the navigation, you will likely need to reorder the navigation to fit better in your website.

To start, while Editing the Page, make sure the Include in Right Navigation? box is checked.

  1. Go to the folder the webpage is located in.
  2. Select the Order column header to display all the assets in the folder in their current order. There are two ways to order the assets once Order has been selected:
    1. Using a mouse or your finger on a touchscreen, drag and drop the asset by its name up or down the list to reorder them.
    2. Alternatively, check the box for the asset and scroll up to the top of the screen to select the up arrows or down arrows to move assets up or down a level.
  3. If you need to display more assets on the screen in order to rearrange them, select the number of assets displayed in Show or display all of them at the same time.

Step 9: Preview and Publish that Page or Website

Always check your page to see if you are missing anything. The accessibility checker will find some issues and not publish them, so fix those first. Make sure your webpage is linked to the appropriate page(s) before publishing:

  • Publish just the page when you are not affecting the navigation of your website or changing multiple pages or files at one time
  • Publish the whole website folder when you have changed the right navigation or made changes to multiple pages or files at one time.

If no one is supposed to know about it except from an email, do not link to it from any webpage when you publish. If it needs to be hidden from search engines, contact Web Services. Use the Live option under the More menu to grab the link after you have published for use in your message.
