{"id":2624,"date":"2021-09-14T15:48:43","date_gmt":"2021-09-14T20:48:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.tarleton.edu\/becomeatexan\/?p=2624"},"modified":"2025-10-21T11:54:01","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T16:54:01","slug":"freshman-guide-to-living-on-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/becomeatexan\/freshman-guide-to-living-on-campus\/","title":{"rendered":"Freshman Guide to Living on Campus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Living on Tarleton State\u2019s campus will allow you to get involved on campus, stay engaged with student life, and grow closer to your fellow classmates! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span style=\"color:#4f2d7f\" class=\"has-inline-color\">On-Campus Housing Benefits<\/span><\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list add-bullet\">\n<li>Meet new people and make friends.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Walking distance to class. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Built-in support system (RL mentor, access to the library around the clock, free tutoring, on-site health center, and counseling services).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Housing and meals are included on your tuition statement (which means you don&#8217;t have to &#8220;make rent&#8221; every month or do a lot of shopping for groceries).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rooms are fully furnished (just bring the things that make it feel like home).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Free laundry, high-speed internet, cable, and utilities like electricity, heating, and water. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consistently voted one of the safest campuses in Texas!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Transitioning from high school to college and adjusting to college life is so important that Tarleton students are committed to living on campus for at least two years. There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/housing\/incoming-students\/options.html\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/housing\/incoming-students\/options.html\"><span style=\"color:#4f2d7f\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">six residence hall options<\/span><\/span><\/a> available for first-time freshmen that range in amenities and price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><strong><span style=\"color:#4f2d7f\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Hunewell and Hunewell Annex<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/housing\/housing-options\/hunewell.html\">H<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/housing\/housing-options\/hunewell.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unewell and Hunewell Annex<\/a> are the oldest residence halls on campus, built in 1961 and renovated in 2017. Students who live here often say the whole hall becomes a family and spend a lot of time outside their rooms with the other residents. If you are looking to meet people and make friends quickly, Hunewell and Hunewell Annex are perfect for that! Living in Hunewell also gives you access to a community kitchen, which means you don\u2019t have to rely on the dining hall or top ramen every time you\u2019re hungry!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span style=\"color:#4f2d7f\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Pros<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list add-bullet\">\n<li>Least expensive residence hall option for first-year students.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open floor plan and 4-person suites make it easy to meet people and make friends.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Access to a community kitchen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Large lobby with lots of seating and a TV for movie nights.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each room has a micro-fridge (microwave on top with minifridge on bottom).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Close to Heritage Park so you can easily see the Purple Poo on Monday nights.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span style=\"color:#4f2d7f\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Cons<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list add-bullet\">\n<li>Not in close proximity to other first-year residence halls.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You will be sharing a bathroom with three other suitemates.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rooms have an open floor plan so there is very little privacy from your roommate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are two laundry rooms in the building.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><strong><span style=\"color:#4f2d7f\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Centennial Hall<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/housing\/housing-options\/centennial.html\">Centennial Hall<\/a> is one of the closest residence halls to the Recreation Center, Intramural Fields, and the soon-to-be Aquatic Center. With two different room layouts and recent renovations, it is a great choice for first-year students. Located right off of Purple Poo Way, students are only a short walk away from the Tarleton Student Center and Rudder Way, which will take you anywhere you need to go on campus. As one of the most affordable residence halls on campus, you can\u2019t go wrong with Centennial!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span style=\"color:#4f2d7f\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Pros<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list add-bullet\">\n<li>One of the most affordable residence hall options.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two floorplan options (open-concept or semi-private).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The bathroom is private to the room (which means you only have to share with your roommate).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each floor has a laundry room.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Close to the Recreation Center which makes getting in a quick workout convenient.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Close to the intramural fields if you plan to get involved in campus sports or a rec league!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> Each room has a micro-fridge (microwave on top with minifridge on bottom). <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Short walk to the Thompson Student Center.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span style=\"color:#4f2d7f\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Cons<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list add-bullet\">\n<li>Limited privacy from your roommate if you are placed in an open-concept room.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If in a split or semi-private room, only one roommate space has a window.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The lobby is smaller than the lobby in Hunnewell.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No community kitchen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><strong><span style=\"color:#4f2d7f\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Legacy and Legends<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/housing\/housing-options\/legacy.html\">L<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/housing\/housing-options\/legacy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">egacy and Legends<\/a> are identical residence halls and among the newest housing options available to first-year Tarleton students! Legends and Legacy provide semi-private rooms that are a popular layout while maintaining a midpoint price range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span style=\"color:#4f2d7f\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Pros<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list add-bullet\">\n<li>Privacy! This layout gives you some privacy from your roommate without being totally closed off (but you can easily create more privacy by placing a tension rod with a curtain between rooms).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bathroom only with your roommate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mid-range price!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A newer building in the heart of campus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> Each room has a micro-fridge (microwave on top with minifridge on bottom). <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One laundry room per floor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Super close to the Recreation Center and Thompson Student Center!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span style=\"color:#4f2d7f\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Cons<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list add-bullet\">\n<li>No community kitchen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only one roommate space has a window.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><strong><span style=\"color:#4f2d7f\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Heritage<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/housing\/housing-options\/heritage.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Heritage <\/a>is one of Tarleton\u2019s largest first-year residence halls on campus! With a two-bedroom, four-person suite-style layout, students are bound to make new, close friends with their roommates and suitemates. Each roommate has a window on their side of the room, which is perfect for succulent plants or simply getting some natural light into the room. The room setup offers privacy, which is hard to come by on campus. Some of the Heritage residents hang a curtain with a tension rod between the rooms for added privacy. The bathroom is big enough to accommodate the four suitemates and offers plenty of storage space. Heritage is a short walk to the Thompson Student Center (easy Chick-Fil-A access) and to the Tarleton Dining Hall. Truly a great option for first-year students!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span style=\"color:#4f2d7f\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Pros<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list add-bullet\">\n<li>Privacy! There is a partial wall separating your space from your roommates.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each roommate gets a window.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each room has a micro-fridge (microwave on top with minifridge on bottom). <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is a ton of storage in the bathrooms!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is a laundry room on every floor and 8 community kitchens in the building.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One of the newest residence halls with a landscaped courtyard and outdoor grilling areas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HUGE lobby with pool table, big screen tv, gaming system, and lots of seating.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get your mail delivered to your own building post office, rather than the student center.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Short walk to the Thompson Student Center and Dining Hall.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Every student gets their own sink and vanity storage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two private bathroom\/shower rooms per suite.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span style=\"color:#4f2d7f\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Cons<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list add-bullet\">\n<li>Each two-person room is linked through the bathroom.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Small elevator capacity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-huge-font-size\"><strong><span style=\"color:#4f2d7f\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Honors Hall<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span style=\"color:#4f2d7f\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Pros<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list add-bullet\">\n<li>Two-floor plan options. The suite-style room option has fully private rooms, full-sized beds, and a small living room.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Newest residence hall with private courtyard, outdoor grilling, and outdoor fireplace.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HUGE lobby with floor-to-ceiling bookcase, full kitchen, and lots of seating.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two community kitchens are available on each floor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Surrounded by other Honors College students makes it easy to study together (some honors classes meet in the building).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A lot of resources are available exclusively to students living in Honors Hall!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Centrally located on campus, so you are a short walk to everything.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Multiple price options to meet the needs of all Honors students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span style=\"color:#4f2d7f\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Cons<\/span><\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list add-bullet\">\n<li>Have to be accepted into Honors College to be eligible to live in Honors Hall.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Suite-style room layout is the most expensive housing option for first-year students.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not located in the first-year residence hall area of campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><strong><span style=\"color:#4f2d7f\" class=\"has-inline-color\">So, what\u2019s the takeaway?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Truly, you can\u2019t go wrong with any residence hall option at Tarleton State! Because living on campus is highly sought after by first and second-year students, you will be surrounded by all of your classmates and get the full college experience from day one! The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/housing\/apply\/incoming.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">housing application<\/a> is open and residence halls are filled in the order applications are received so the early bird truly gets the worm. Submit your housing application materials early and pay the $150 application fee early. Don&#8217;t wait!
