October 9, 2011 Concert

The October 9, 2011 concert offered a few firsts for the Tarleton Band Program.

For the first time in recent memory, the concert was held on a Sunday afternoon to accommodate parents of students in the ensemble and concertgoers of young families.  The Band Program also began a new series for the first concert, titled Masterworks Concert.  The Masterworks Concert intends to display music that has been considered by many to be masterworks in the band repertoire.  It also allows the Band Program to suggest current composers and their works that may eventually become masterworks in the future.  In addition to performing masterworks on the concert, the event is surrounded by the Band Program bringing in a visitor who is considered a 'master in their field.'  This year's invited clinician is Dr. James R. Saker, the Director of Bands at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.  Dr. Saker presented several clinic sessions for all music majors on a variety of topics ranging from recruiting and retention of high school students to conducting and concert programming.

The Sunday afternoon program included two performing ensembles: The Wind Ensemble and the newly formed University Band.  Because the band Program has grown in the past few years, there are many more music majors to accommodate and there is a growing interest in concert ensemble performing by many non-music majors.
