Band Ensemble Auditions

The Tarleton band program proudly sponsors three concert bands and three jazz bands. Concert ensembles include the Wind Ensemble, the Symphonic Band, and the University Band. Jazz ensembles include Jazz Ensemble I, Jazz Ensemble II, and Jazz Ensemble III.

All ensembles except for University Band meet in both fall and spring semesters. Placement in Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble I, and Jazz Ensemble II are by audition only, and roster placements carry over from the fall semester to the spring semester each year. No new auditions are held for these ensembles going into the spring semester. See below for more information about each ensemble.

Auditions for the 2022-23 concert bands and jazz bands will take place the first two days of the fall semester, Thursday, August 18 and Friday, August 19, 2022, during the afternoon and evening hours. Schedule an audition through the links below:

Eligibility and Requirements

Auditions for all Tarleton band ensembles are open to ALL Tarleton students regardless of major. Music majors are required to enroll in a large ensemble each semester (Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Jazz I, Jazz II, or Jazz III). Scholarship recipients accepting a written scholarship agreement upon entering Tarleton have ensemble participation and audition requirements per your agreement while receiving band scholarship funds.

2022-23 Jazz Ensemble Auditions

Auditions for the jazz ensembles are held prior to the fall semester only, and those placing in those groups will retain their seating into the spring semester. Enrollment in Jazz Ensemble I and Jazz Ensemble II is by audition only. Any student may enroll in Jazz Ensemble III without an audition. Any vacancies in the jazz ensembles throughout the year will be filled at the discretion of Dr. Stonerock.

Wind Instruments

  • Prepare the following excerpts according to your instrument
  • Sight-reading will also be a part of the audition

Rhythm Instruments

  • Prepare the following excerpts according to your instrument
  • In addition, be prepared to comp through a few choruses of "All of Me" with a stylistically appropriate interpretation of a medium swing (drum patterns, walking, chord voicings, etc.)

Improvisation (optional for all instruments)

  • Prepare a tune and either bring a lead sheet or a backing track
  • Improvisation is encouraged for your audition, but not required
  • Improvisation will be required of anyone interested in Jazz Combo

 Audition Music

Jazz Ensemble I (Dr. Andrew Stonerock, director) meets Mon/Wed/Fri from 12:30 to 1:50 pm. It will meet for the first time on Monday, August 22 at 12:30 pm in the Band Hall. This course is MUEN 3132 and has course registration number 93680.

Jazz Ensemble II (Prof. Tom Burchill, director) meets Tues/Thurs from 5:10 to 6:25 pm. It will meet for the first time on Tuesday, August 23 at 5:10 pm in the Band Hall. This course is MUEN 3133 and has course registration number 93682.

Jazz Ensemble III (Prof. Wade Girton, director) meets Tues/Thurs from 5:10 to 6:25 pm. It will meet for the first time on Tuesday, August 23 at 5:10 pm in the Choir Hall. This course is MUEN 3128 and has course registration number 93686.

All are welcome to either provisionally enroll in any of the above courses or wait until after auditions to add the appropriate ensembles to your schedule.

2022-23 Concert Band Auditions

Auditions for concert bands will consist only of prepared music from the packets below. Those auditioning for Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band will retain their seating into the spring semester. Enrollment in Wind Ensemble is by audition only. Any student may enroll in Symphonic Band without an audition. However those that audition will be placed ahead of those that do not, and those that do not audition are not guaranteed seating in the spring Symphonic Band. Any vacancies in the Wind Ensemble throughout the year will be filled from the membership in Symphonic Band in chair order. Our third concert band, University Band, meets only in the spring semester and is open for enrollment without an audition.

Wind Ensemble Audition Music

Wind Ensemble (Dr. David Robinson, conductor) meets Tues/Thurs from 3:05 to 5:00 pm. It will meet for the first time on Tuesday, August 23 at 3:05 pm in the Band Hall. This course is MUEN 3123 and has course registration number 93644.

Symphonic Band (Dr. Gary Westbrook, conductor) meets Tues/Thurs from 1:40 to 2:55 pm. It will meet for the first time on Tuesday, August 23 at 1:40 pm in the Band Hall. This course is MUEN 3130 and has course registration number 93673.

University Band (Dr. David Robinson, conductor) meets only in the spring semester on Tuesdays from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. This course is MUEN 3129 and is open enrollment without audition.
