Vices

Charlotte LeBlanc

Come! Use me, the needle pleas.
Sip! Savor me, the wine cries
Feel no control, away it seeps,
so that every four seconds a crack baby dies.

Here! Take the gun, friends say.
Now! Pass the joint, the group demands.
Lightheaded dizziness, inhibitions at bay
so that your mind is haunted by lifeless hands.

Hurry! Faster, society urges.
Slow down! Think, parents warn.
Yo-yoing on binges and purges
so that only loved-ones are left to mourn.

Stop! Rape, victims scream.
Freeze! Hands up, police yell.
Indifference never remains to be seen
so that no one had a clue when you first fell.
