{"id":964,"date":"2022-07-25T13:08:05","date_gmt":"2022-07-25T13:08:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.tarleton.edu\/admissions\/?page_id=964"},"modified":"2026-03-18T15:50:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T15:50:08","slug":"residency","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/admissions\/residency\/","title":{"rendered":"Residency"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-tarleton-purple-color has-text-color\">Residency Determination<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Residency for admission and tuition purposes at a public college or university in Texas is not the same as residency for voting or tax purposes.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.highered.texas.gov\/\">The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board<\/a>&nbsp;and the Texas Legislature established the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/texas-sos.appianportalsgov.com\/rules-and-meetings?$locale=en_US&amp;interface=VIEW_TAC_SUMMARY&amp;queryAsDate=04%2F07%2F2025&amp;recordId=181015\">rules<\/a>&nbsp;that govern Texas residency for tuition purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students and applicants are assigned a residency status based on the answers provided on the admission application. Classifications will be either Texas resident (in-state) or nonresident (out-of-state).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A United States citizen or permanent resident who does not meet the required criteria will be classified as a nonresident for tuition purposes. A non-citizen who is not a permanent resident of the United States and has not been permitted by U.S. Congress to adopt the United States as their domicile while in this country will be classified as a foreign (international) student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Follow these steps: <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Complete and submit the&nbsp;Residency Reclassification Form below<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You will be contacted via your student email regarding documents you are required to submit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" id=\"RR\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; max-width: 100%; max-height: 100vh;\" src=\"https:\/\/forms.office.com\/Pages\/ResponsePage.aspx?id=OOZeLGOpwEmsJoKN2beNXpQrcTJdNnxDj9_pQloZTpJUNzM0V05CRjA4MUFGUUk0NFZBMFZDVVVWSiQlQCN0PWcu&amp;embed=true\" title=\"Residency Determination\" width=\"1100px\" height=\"480px\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"> <\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-tarleton-purple-color has-text-color\" id=\"out-of-state-residency-change-3d750f42-1ffe-4b8b-9d11-2d1aed0ba140\">Out-of-state residency change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you live in Texas solely to attend school and reside out-of-state for the rest of the year, you are a resident of that state and are not eligible for Texas residency for tuition purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Individuals or parent\/court-appointed legal guardians attempting to establish their residency in Texas must physically reside in the state&nbsp;and&nbsp;establish domicile in Texas, by one of the four factors listed below, at least 12 months prior to the semester requested. It is the student&#8217;s responsibility to provide documentation in support of their claim of domicile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-tarleton-purple-color has-text-color\" id=\"criteria-for-establishing-domicile-e28d25c7-b3da-47dd-93d3-46993935e096\">Criteria for Establishing Domicile<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The following factors occurring throughout at least 12 consecutive months immediately preceding your term of enrollment&nbsp;<strong>may&nbsp;lend support<\/strong> to your claim of establishing and maintaining a domicile:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sole or joint marital ownership of residential real property in Texas; having established and maintained principal, permanent residence at that address.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ownership and customary management of a business while residing in Texas which is regularly operated without the intent of liquidation in the foreseeable future.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gainful employment that provides for at least one-half of the individual&#8217;s expenses or employment of at least twenty hours per week.&nbsp;<strong>Employment conditioned upon your status as a student such as work-study, student assistant employment, receipt of stipends, financial aid refunds, fellowships, teaching assistantships, etc. does not qualify as gainful employment.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marriage to a person who has established and maintained a domicile by one of the above three methods. The marriage must have taken place at least 12 months prior to the term of enrollment.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-tarleton-purple-color has-texan-white-background-color has-text-color has-background\"><strong>The cost of attendance benchmark for gainful employment is based on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/finaid\/cost\/undergraduate\/\">undergraduate cost to attend<\/a>. We take the total undergraduate Texas Resident tuition and divide it in half. &nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Refer to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/texas-sos.appianportalsgov.com\/rules-and-meetings?$locale=en_US&amp;interface=VIEW_TAC_SUMMARY&amp;queryAsDate=04%2F07%2F2025&amp;recordId=181015\">Rules and Regulations<\/a>&nbsp;on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mytexasfuture.org\/middle-high-school\/explore-financial-aid\/apply-for-financial-aid\/residency-information\/\">My Texas Future<\/a> website for additional information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-tarleton-purple-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7808e3f81144ee4b811a57e3f6698328\">Maintenance of Domicile<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A person who established domicile through the previous section and continues to reside in the State of Texas, except for temporary absences, is considered to have maintained domicile in Texas for that period of time unless he or she takes specific steps to change his or her domicile to a different location. Students must also provide documentation that supports they have been residing in the state for twelve consecutive months, including, but not limited to driver&#8217;s license, utility bills, vehicle registration, etc. Additional information could be requested based on the evaluation of the documentation provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-tarleton-purple-color has-text-color\" id=\"additional-pathways-to-residency-8e803ef6-afe0-41ec-b739-9812cd8f9a89\">Additional Pathways to Residency<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-advgb-accordions advgb-accordions-d95aa864-7950-4c01-9a57-7746f1bec972 advgb-accordion-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-advgb-accordion-item advgb-accordion-item\" style=\"margin-bottom:15px\"><div class=\"advgb-accordion-header\" style=\"background-color:#ffffff;color:#4f2d7f;border-style:solid;border-width:1px;border-color:#ffffff;border-radius:2px\"><span class=\"advgb-accordion-header-icon accordion-state\"><svg class=\"advgb-icon-closed\" fill=\"#4f2d7f\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" width=\"24\" height=\"24\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path fill=\"none\" d=\"M0,0h24v24H0V0z\"><\/path><path d=\"M12,5.83L15.17,9l1.41-1.41L12,3L7.41,7.59L8.83,9L12,5.83z M12,18.17L8.83,15l-1.41,1.41L12,21l4.59-4.59L15.17,15 L12,18.17z\"><\/path><\/svg><svg class=\"advgb-icon-opened\" fill=\"#4f2d7f\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" width=\"24\" height=\"24\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path fill=\"none\" d=\"M0,0h24v24H0V0z\"><\/path><path d=\"M7.41,18.59L8.83,20L12,16.83L15.17,20l1.41-1.41L12,14L7.41,18.59z M16.59,5.41L15.17,4L12,7.17L8.83,4L7.41,5.41L12,10L16.59,5.41z\"><\/path><\/svg><\/span><h3 class=\"advgb-accordion-header-title\" style=\"color:inherit\">Eligibility Through High School<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"advgb-accordion-body\" style=\"border-style:solid !important;border-width:1px !important;border-color:#ffffff !important;border-top:none !important;border-radius:2px !important\">\n<p>Undergraduate students that <strong>meet all the following criteria<\/strong> qualify as a Texas resident for tuition purposes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Graduated from a public or accredited private high school in Texas or received the equivalent of a Texas high school diploma in the state <strong>AND<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lived in Texas for the 36 months immediately preceding the date of high school graduation <strong>AND<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lived in Texas the 12 months preceding the census date of the academic semester in which the student enrolls at Tarleton State University<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-advgb-accordion-item advgb-accordion-item\" style=\"margin-bottom:15px\"><div class=\"advgb-accordion-header\" style=\"background-color:#ffffff;color:#4f2d7f;border-style:solid;border-width:1px;border-color:#ffffff;border-radius:2px\"><span class=\"advgb-accordion-header-icon accordion-state\"><svg class=\"advgb-icon-closed\" fill=\"#4f2d7f\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" width=\"24\" height=\"24\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path fill=\"none\" d=\"M0,0h24v24H0V0z\"><\/path><path d=\"M12,5.83L15.17,9l1.41-1.41L12,3L7.41,7.59L8.83,9L12,5.83z M12,18.17L8.83,15l-1.41,1.41L12,21l4.59-4.59L15.17,15 L12,18.17z\"><\/path><\/svg><svg class=\"advgb-icon-opened\" fill=\"#4f2d7f\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" width=\"24\" height=\"24\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path fill=\"none\" d=\"M0,0h24v24H0V0z\"><\/path><path d=\"M7.41,18.59L8.83,20L12,16.83L15.17,20l1.41-1.41L12,14L7.41,18.59z M16.59,5.41L15.17,4L12,7.17L8.83,4L7.41,5.41L12,10L16.59,5.41z\"><\/path><\/svg><\/span><h3 class=\"advgb-accordion-header-title\" style=\"color:inherit\">Financially Independent Student<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"advgb-accordion-body\" style=\"border-style:solid !important;border-width:1px !important;border-color:#ffffff !important;border-top:none !important;border-radius:2px !important\">\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An individual who provides more than one-half of their own financial support and is not eligible to be claimed as a dependent for income tax purposes <strong>AND<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has established and maintained their domicile in Texas for the 12 consecutive months preceding the census date of the academic semester in which they enroll at Tarleton State University<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has maintained a residence continuously in the state for the 12 months immediately preceding the census date of the academic semester in which the person enrolls in the institution<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>We may request 12 months of pay stubs from all employment to support the student&#8217;s claim of Texas residency for tuition purposes. Multiple jobs are permitted as long as they qualify under the rules for gainful employment above in Criteria for Establishing Domicile.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-advgb-accordion-item advgb-accordion-item\" style=\"margin-bottom:15px\"><div class=\"advgb-accordion-header\" style=\"background-color:#ffffff;color:#4f2d7f;border-style:solid;border-width:1px;border-color:#ffffff;border-radius:2px\"><span class=\"advgb-accordion-header-icon accordion-state\"><svg class=\"advgb-icon-closed\" fill=\"#4f2d7f\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" width=\"24\" height=\"24\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path fill=\"none\" d=\"M0,0h24v24H0V0z\"><\/path><path d=\"M12,5.83L15.17,9l1.41-1.41L12,3L7.41,7.59L8.83,9L12,5.83z M12,18.17L8.83,15l-1.41,1.41L12,21l4.59-4.59L15.17,15 L12,18.17z\"><\/path><\/svg><svg class=\"advgb-icon-opened\" fill=\"#4f2d7f\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" width=\"24\" height=\"24\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path fill=\"none\" d=\"M0,0h24v24H0V0z\"><\/path><path d=\"M7.41,18.59L8.83,20L12,16.83L15.17,20l1.41-1.41L12,14L7.41,18.59z M16.59,5.41L15.17,4L12,7.17L8.83,4L7.41,5.41L12,10L16.59,5.41z\"><\/path><\/svg><\/span><h3 class=\"advgb-accordion-header-title\" style=\"color:inherit\">Financially Dependent Student basing Residency on Parent<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"advgb-accordion-body\" style=\"border-style:solid !important;border-width:1px !important;border-color:#ffffff !important;border-top:none !important;border-radius:2px !important\">\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An individual whose parent or court-appointed legal guardian claims the student as a dependent for federal income tax purposes (or provides more than half of the student&#8217;s financial support for those not subject to US federal income taxes) <strong>AND<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has established a domicile in Texas not less than 12 months before the census date of the academic semester in which they enroll at Tarleton State University <strong>AND<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has maintained a residence continuously in the state for the 12 months immediately preceding the census date of the academic semester in which the person enrolls in the institution.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>We may request the most recent 1040 tax form showing the student is claimed as a dependent&nbsp;and&nbsp;proof of parental employment over the previous 12 months to support the claim of Texas residency for tuition purposes.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-advgb-accordion-item advgb-accordion-item\" style=\"margin-bottom:15px\"><div class=\"advgb-accordion-header\" style=\"background-color:#ffffff;color:#4f2d7f;border-style:solid;border-width:1px;border-color:#ffffff;border-radius:2px\"><span class=\"advgb-accordion-header-icon accordion-state\"><svg class=\"advgb-icon-closed\" fill=\"#4f2d7f\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" width=\"24\" height=\"24\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path fill=\"none\" d=\"M0,0h24v24H0V0z\"><\/path><path d=\"M12,5.83L15.17,9l1.41-1.41L12,3L7.41,7.59L8.83,9L12,5.83z M12,18.17L8.83,15l-1.41,1.41L12,21l4.59-4.59L15.17,15 L12,18.17z\"><\/path><\/svg><svg class=\"advgb-icon-opened\" fill=\"#4f2d7f\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" width=\"24\" height=\"24\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path fill=\"none\" d=\"M0,0h24v24H0V0z\"><\/path><path d=\"M7.41,18.59L8.83,20L12,16.83L15.17,20l1.41-1.41L12,14L7.41,18.59z M16.59,5.41L15.17,4L12,7.17L8.83,4L7.41,5.41L12,10L16.59,5.41z\"><\/path><\/svg><\/span><h3 class=\"advgb-accordion-header-title\" style=\"color:inherit\">Military Student or Dependent<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"advgb-accordion-body\" style=\"border-style:solid !important;border-width:1px !important;border-color:#ffffff !important;border-top:none !important;border-radius:2px !important\">\n<p>The following information is provided for members of the United States Armed Services and their spouses or dependents. Students can qualify as Texas residents in one of these two ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The service member&#8217;s Home of Record with the military is Texas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The service member&#8217;s Home of Record is not Texas, but their taxable state has been Texas for at least 12 consecutive months prior to enrollment.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Documents we may request include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The service member&#8217;s Officer\/Enlisted Records Brief<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The last 12 months of Leave and Earnings Statements showing Texas as the taxable state<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Form DD-214 if the service member has separated from the military<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>If the student is a dependent of the service member, we will also require the most recent 1040 tax form showing the student is claimed as a dependent or a copy of the student&#8217;s military dependent ID card<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-tarleton-purple-color has-text-color\" id=\"noncitizens-who-attend-a-texas-high-school-5bae54cb-8578-4cc7-82db-b70debee86a8\">Non-Citizens Who Attend a Texas High School<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-tarleton-texan-black-color has-texan-white-background-color has-text-color has-background\">In order to qualify as a Texas resident for tuition purposes, <strong>ALL&nbsp;of the following criteria<\/strong> must be met: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Must provide documentation that you are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dps.texas.gov\/internetforms\/Forms\/DL-53.pdf\">lawfully present<\/a>&nbsp;and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/admissions\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/179\/2025\/07\/2025-07-18_Revised_Residency_Affidavit-1.pdf\">Affidavit of Intent to Become a Permanent Resident<\/a>&nbsp;which states the following:\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I graduated or will graduate from a Texas high school or received my State of Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency prior to the start of the term for which I am applying for admission.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I resided or will have resided in Texas for thirty-six months preceding graduation from a Texas high school or receiving my State of Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I have resided or will have resided in Texas for the twelve-months immediately preceding the census date of the semester in which I will enroll in.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I am able to demonstrate to the institution at which I seek to enroll that I am lawfully present in the United States.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I have filed or will file an application to become a permanent resident of the United States as soon as I am eligible to do so; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I understand that it is a crime under section 37.10 of the Texas Penal Code to knowingly submit false information in this affidavit.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-tarleton-purple-color has-text-color\" id=\"deadlines-aec4169a-bdc3-49f6-a31c-6f6eb0a45a8c\">Deadlines<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The deadline is the 12th class day for the Fall and Spring terms. The deadlines vary for Summer semesters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flow
