Undergraduate Academic Fresh Start
Texas Education Code 51.931(Academic Fresh Start) allows undergraduate Texas residents seeking admission (or readmission) the opportunity to have all coursework completed ten or more years prior to the requested admission term excluded from academic consideration. Students seeking admission utilizing the Academic Fresh Start option may not choose which credits to exclude; all academic credit (which includes Tarleton State University and transfer coursework) earned ten or more years prior to the requested admission term will be excluded.
Excluded courses will remain on the student’s transcript but noted as being included in the Academic Fresh Start option. Excluded courses will not satisfy degree or prerequisite requirements.
The Academic Fresh Start option may affect:
- Financial Aid – The Academic Fresh Start option is a state law and does not supersede any federal regulations or laws. Therefore, the Academic Fresh Start does not affect federal aid regulations, and certain restrictions may still apply. Please contact the Office of Financial Aid at 254-968-9070 for more information.
- Veteran Benefits – The Academic Fresh Start does not apply to veterans who are utilizing the Montgomery G.I. Bill. All prior credit must apply to the degree requirements. Please contact the Office of Veteran Services at 254-968-1805 for more information.
- Cost of Tuition – The Academic Fresh Start does not apply to the Undergraduate Funding Limit, which permits an institution to charge additional fees for coursework exceeding 150 hours. Please contact the Registrar’s Office at 254-968-9121 for more information.
There may be other areas affected. The student is encouraged to explore all possible outcomes regarding the Academic Fresh Start option.
Since the Academic Fresh Start is part of the admission process, the option is only available at the time of admission and is not available to students currently enrolled at Tarleton State University. The Academic Fresh Start option is irrevocable once processed.
If a student declared the Academic Fresh Start at a previous institution, it is not required to reapply for the option at Tarleton State University as long as the Academic Fresh Start is reflected on the transcript.
Individuals who choose the Academic Fresh Start option must meet current published admission criteria for Tarleton State University and submit official records from all institutions attended.
