Structure Learning Assistant (SLA) Facilitator

Job Qualifications & Description

  1. Preferred qualification: Graduate Student, Required qualification: Junior student classification or above.
  2. An overall GPA of 3.0 or above is required.
  3. A grade of 3.0 or above in the selected or similar course is required; prior enrollment with the professor who is to teach the selected course is preferred.
  4. Content-competency (to be determined by the selected course professor) is required.
  5. Good interpersonal and communications skills (to be determined by the supervisor) are required.
  6. Some classroom management experience required.
Primary Activities
  1. Attend all class meetings of the selected course, take notes, do homework and read all assigned materials including text(s) and supplemental readings.
  2. Conduct two 50-minute study sessions per week throughout the term using strategies learned through the SI/SLA-training workshop by: 

    Organizing and facilitate SLA sessions, including: clarifying course concepts, incorporating study skills, generating notes from course lecture, preparing session materials and activities that correspond with the course lecture, meetings with course faculty, meetings with the Program Coordinator, adhering to program policies, and keeping appropriate lab records as instructed

  3. Regularly meet with the supervisor for debrief sessions.
  4. Discuss observations of the lab.
    1. Discuss the creation and use of handouts.
    2. Discuss the planning of lab sessions and use of a wide variety of learning strategies.
    3. Notify supervisor about problems or potential problems.
  5. Assist supervisor in training other SLA Facilitators.
Secondary Activities
  1. Provide extra test preparation sessions as necessary (e.g., prior to examinations).
  2. Provide handouts for use during SLA lab sessions.
  3. Ascertain course requirements and maintain contact throughout the term with course professor or designated representative.
  4. Meet with other campus SLA Facilitators and supervisory staff at scheduled meetings.
  5. Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Maintenance Activities
  1. Facilitate development study skills as applied to specific course content.
  2. Attend lecture as related to specific lab(s) as applies.
  3. Prepare practice materials and worksheets.
  4. Will prepare interactive sessions that include providing students with strategies for studying and learning the course content.
  5. Meet with the professor(s) weekly for course communication and feedback.
  6. Attend weekly SLA staff meetings with Program Coordinator.
  7. Maintain accurate records of graded lab materials to provide course grade to instructors of the Math 101 course.
  8. Uphold the University’s and Academic Support Centers’ Code of Conduct.
  9. Maintain appropriate correspondence with students regarding session information.
  10. Maintain a professional working environment in the classroom and lab.
  11. Administer quizzes and classroom activities as prescribed by the Mathematics Department Head and/or Freshman Mathematics Coordinator and/or Director of the Academic Resource Center.
  12. Complete necessary personnel paperwork.
  13. Attend SLA Facilitator training workshop at the beginning of each term.
  14. Attend all labs on time and prepared.
  15. Administer end-of-term evaluation to SI class to get student input on effectiveness of the SI program.
  16. Maintain a professional attitude about matters such as class standards, grades, and student complaints.
  17. Model appropriate professional attitudes and behaviors to staff, students, and others.
  18. Notify your SI supervisor in advance if you cannot conduct a lab session as scheduled and arrange for coverage of lab with personnel approval from Director of the Academic Resource Center.
  19. Maintain regular working hours.
  20. Provide documentation to the Director of the Academic Resource Center of all work hours.

Responsibilities: Reports directly to the Director of the Academic Resource Center and the Department Head of Mathematics.

Responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of designated information.

Performs all duties in compliance with applicable University policies and procedures and state and federal requirements.
