Become a Friend
Established in 1990, The Friends of the Dick Smith Library at Tarleton State University is a volunteer organization dedicated to the support of the Library. Membership dues and the generosity of donors enable Friends to provide this support.
Friends fund the acquisition of educational amenities which lie outside of the library budget; help sponsor discussions, lectures, book talks, and other scholarly activities; and aid in the creation of endowments, bequests, and other gifts to the Library.
Member support is instrumental in helping the Friends achieve its mission of maintaining an association of individuals interested in strengthening and enhancing the Dick Smith Library collections and promoting the Library’s usefulness to the University and the community.

Daniel L. Smith will be speaking about his new book The Bankhead Highway in Texas: Texas Highway No. 1.
The Bankhead Highway was the first all-weather transcontinental highway in America, running from Washington, D.C, in the east to San Diego, California in the west. About a third of its length lay in Texas between Texarkana and El Paso. Much of the old highway is still visible and still passable. Designated as Texas Highway 1 by the nascent Texas Highway Department, much of the route from the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex west through Weatherford, Millsap, and Mineral Wells was later used by the new U.S. Highway 80.
