The University Writing Center

Writing Center Mission Statement:
The Writing Center is an instructional service with the mission of helping student writers in all stages of the composing process. Our writing consultants can address a variety of writing issues in any stage of a paper. Consultants can help students with any course related writing projects in any discipline. Students can expect knowledgeable, professional help with their work; the Writing Center is staffed with graduate students, undergraduate students, and English Department Faculty members. The Writing Center consultants want students to become thoughtful, independent writers which means that the consultants will teach students to revise, proofread, and edit their papers.
Do I have to be in
an English class to get help with my writing?
Many students believe they have to
be in
an English class in order to take advantage of the Writing Center;
however, this is not true. Bring your writing projects from any
class or major, and we'll be glad to work with you.
When can I come to
the Writing Center?
The Writing
Center has regular hours each week. You can make an appointment,
or you can just drop in. To make an appointment, call
968-1814. If you want to drop by with your work, we are located
in the Humanities Building, Room 210. If our writing consultants
are busy when you arrive, they will be glad to set an appointment for
you at a later time, usually that same day. Students
should
bring papers to the Writing Center well in advance of the paper due
date
so the consultants have more time to work with the students.
What can I expect
from a tutoring session in the Writing Center?
You can
expect knowledgeable, professional help with your work. The Writing
Center is staffed with graduate students, undergraduate students, and
English Department faculty members. The Writing Center
consultants want you to become a thoughtful, independent writer. This means that the consultants will not revise, proofread, or edit
your papers for you, but they will teach you how to do these things for
yourself so you become a more confident writer.
