Frequently asked questions:
What is a listserv, list serve, or list server?
A listserv is a mailing list program for communicating with other people who have subscribed to the same list. Using e-mail, you can participate in listservs pertaining to your topics of interest, in this case news pertinent to members of the Tarleton Student Wildlife Society. When you submit a message to the server, your message is relayed to all those on the listserv. You receive messages from other participants via e-mail.
Listserv is a truncated form of "list server." When listserv began, the name needed to be no longer than eight characters due to computer coding conventions.
Why should I subscribe to the L_STUWILDLIFE listserv?
Subscription to the listserv is how reminders about meetings and upcoming events are disseminated to interested parties. It is also a way to communicate with other members and alumni about professional, wildlife society related issues. If you want to know what the Student Wildlife Society is doing, subscribe to the listserv.
Conditions for listserv subscriptions:
The L_STUWILDLIFE listserv is for professional communication. Views expressed are those of the individual author and do not reflect the views of the TSU Student Wildlife Society. Subscription to the listserv is open to current TSU students/faculty/staff, TSU alumni, and interested professionals. In subscribing to this list, members must agree to the following guidelines:
- Include a signature tag on all messages: include your name and email address. This makes it easier to know who said what on a long string of email messages. Not everyone's e-mail address indicates who the message is from.
- Send responses such as "thanks for the information" or "I agree" or personal comments to the appropriate individual's email, not the entire list.
- Please do not send product advertisements, chain letters, jokes, and such over the list.
- DO NOT FORWARD GENERIC VIRUS WARNINGS TO LISTSERVS. Keep a current virus protection package on your computer instead.
- Defamatory, profane, offensive, or illegal content and messages (including disclosures) are strictly prohibited.
- Be courteous when replying to listserv messages. Do not challenge or attack other participants.
- Should a disagreement arise with another person, continue your discussion off-line. Do not continue to send messages to the list or the group.
- Don't get involved in arguments.
- If you wouldn't want your message read to the public, do not send it on the listserv since messages may be forwarded to non-intended third parties.
- Send subscribe and unsubscribe messages to the appropriate address. As a reminder to yourself, save the instructions on how to subscribe and unsubscribe from the list.
- Consider unsubscribing or setting a "no mail" when you cannot check your mail for an extended period.
- The list moderator may suspend or terminate the user's access to the listserv if guidelines are continually not followed.
