Make Your Department Easier to Find in Search Engines!
Make your department or organization site easier to find through the search engine by adding specific “keywords” to the Title portion of your homepage (index.htm or index.html). The Title portion of the page is what appears at the very top bar of the browser window.
For instance, when you go to this site's homepage: http://www.tarleton.edu/~webservices/
you will see the title at the top of the browser as, “Web Services – Tarleton State University – Web site account, uploading and publishing, Dreamweaver help”. You will see that we added the desired “keywords” at the end of the title. Also, we have our Department name first, and then Tarleton State University in the middle, and each section is separated by the dash character. We ask that everyone follow this same format in their titles.
To decide what keywords to add in your title, you can ask students, faculty, or staff what they most often search for when looking for your site, or figure out what some of the most important items are in the site and list those. Just 3-5 keywords separated by commas are enough to start placing your site better on the search engine.
It may take several weeks for the keywords to become effective in finding your site. If the keywords seem ineffective after that amount of time, you can always replace them with different ones.
If you have any questions about keywords and search engine placement, please give us a call at 968-9713 or email www@tarleton.edu and we will be happy to assist you!
