Probationary and Standard Teacher Certification
Probationary and Standard Teacher Certifications are issued by the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC).
A Probationary Teaching Certificate qualifies you to teach one internship year while you are enrolled in an approved alternative teacher certification program like TMATE. You apply for it as soon as you have an official internship year teaching position.
The SBEC may refuse to issue a probationary teaching certificate for someone who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor for a moral turpitude crime that relates to the teaching function. The online application includes a criminal history background information check conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
A Standard Teaching Certificate authorizes a person to teach in any public school district in Texas. The certificate is valid for five years, and specific professional development requirements must be met before it can be renewed. You apply for standard certification at the end of your internship teaching year.
To qualify for standard certification, you must:
- Successfully complete all TMATE coursework.
- Successfully complete your one year internship.
- Pass the TExES required content knowledge and Pedagogy and Professional Responsibility exams.
- Be recommended by your internship school district.
- Be recommended by TMATE and the Tarleton Certification Office.
