Learning how to teach

When I began the TMATE program, I knew that teaching was probably an easy job and I couldn't wait to get started with my new class. I promptly changed my opinion the first day of class. I did more in the first 15 minutes of the school day than I did all day at any other job. I became a nurse, a janitor, a parent and friend, a teacher, and, most importantly, a more caring, understanding person. I finally had the fulfillment I had been searching for with occupations along the way.

Lynn Carroll, 2006-2007

The torrid pace that was set in the summer during TMATE classes was good because it made the torrid pace of teaching and coaching at the same time easier to get used to.

Teaching is both an art and a science. Knowing about a subject like math or English doesn't mean someone intuitively understands how to share that knowledge. And liking children doesn't mean someone instinctively recognizes the best ways to help them learn.

The TMATE curriculum of graduate level courses has been developed to maximize your learning experience and to prepare you for success in the classroom. The beginning point for EC-4 and 4-8 Generalists and Special Education applicants is the TMATE Spring Mini-Mester offered each January. This course will solidify your understanding of the curriculum in English language arts, reading, math, social studies, fine arts, health, and physical education.

The next block, the summer pre-Internship courses, taken by all applicants, are intensive experiences in which you are introduced to the fundamentals of teaching ("pedagogy"), including how to design curriculum and plan lessons. And because teachers are responsible for creating and maintaining a productive learning environment, you learn classroom management strategies.

Teaching is a fellowship. While working with other TMATE interns toward your common goal of becoming certified teachers, you will learn to plan and teach as a team and develop strong professional and personal bonds with your TMATE colleagues, just as you will with professionals during your internship year.
