TMATE
Alternative teacher certification program for highly motivated people who have a Bachelor's Degree
The Tarleton Model for Accelerated Teacher Education (TMATE) was established in 1986 at Tarleton State University's Stephenville campus. It was Texas' first university-based approved alternative teacher certification program. Since then almost 2,000 Bachelor's Degree holders have made successful career transitions into the teaching profession with TMATE's help.
In 2000, the TMATE program expanded from Stephenville to Tarleton Central Texas (TCT) in Killeen (now Texas A&M University - Central Texas). The Killeen program is particularly attractive to military personnel preparing for a second career after they retire or leave the Armed Services.
In January 2001, the Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) and Tarleton began a partnership to provide alternative teacher certification for people interested in teaching in FWISD. TMATE-FWISD participants are required to teach in the Fort Worth school district during their internship year.
Certification areas and costs vary slightly at the different program locations, but entrance requirements are the same, and Tarleton faculty teach graduate level courses at all the locations.

This year has been the hardest thing I have ever faced and the most rewarding thing I have ever done. I would not have been able to have done this or to accomplish this goal had it not been for the support of the instructors, administrators, staff and fellow students I have gone through the TMATE program with.
