What does it cost to become certified?
The TMATE program provided such a holistic experience and served as a great source of support during this year. There were several teachers on my campus who became certified through on-line certification programs. According to their own testimonials, they felt extremely ill-prepared for life as a classroom teacher.
I have expressed my desire to bring more TMATE teachers to my campus next year, specifically in the areas of math and science. The training and support they receive are superior. I especially appreciate the time TMATE mentors spend with me comparing notes on their interns.
According to Texas state requirements, all initial teaching certificates must be earned through an approved certification program. A wide variety of programs are offered by colleges and universities, school districts, regional education service centers, community colleges and other entities.
The cost and quality of the programs vary a great deal. Generally, the easier the program, the less it will cost and the less prepared you will be to be a successful teacher. Your certification area also impacts the cost of your certification program.
Before choosing a program, ask yourself if you have enough alternate income or savings to support your family and pay for the teacher training program. If you don't, are you willing to pay for your education with a loan? Does the teacher preparation program you're considering offer financing? Would you qualify for a formal loan from a bank or the government?
