A Piece-full Art

Weatherford Mosaic Artist 'Paints With Glass'

Sunlight pours through a window and fractured colors glitter on walls and dance across the room. Wildflowers, oak trees and Texas flags come to life when rays of light hit them.

From a distance the images look whole, but they’re not. These inventive optical illusions are actually pieces of colored, broken glass carefully positioned together by mosaic artist Kathy Dalrymple of Weatherford.

Dalrymple described her art as “like painting with glass.”

When the ceremony acclaiming the official reopening of the Bosque County Courthouse takes place on Saturday, Sept. 22, overlooking the parade, the speakers and the crowd from atop the courthouse will be the lady with the scales.

Lady Justice, or Themis, is the ancient, mythological Greek goddess of order and social control. Her statute was among the last adornments, and one of the most important, to the 121-year-old courhouse.

Created by Dallas sculptor Barvo Walker, the Lady Justice statue recently was set into place above the courthouse clock tower, just below the weathervane. With a sword held loosely at her right side and her left arm hoisting up the Scales of Justice, the toga-clad, 5- foot, 400-pound Lady Justice was among the final steps in the restoration of the centerpiece of the Meridian town square.

For decades the big purple “T” in Tarleton State University symbolically stood for the traditions its students revere. Today, however, the T could as easily stand for transition.

Tarleton, which many still think of as a rural agricultural college, is undergoing as much if not more change as anyone on campus can remember.

Tarleton State University police records will undergo multiple reviews this year to make sure reporting errors made during the last three years will not be repeated, a top university administrator says.

Tarleton recently revised a required federal report about crime on the Stephenville campus, substantially increasing the number of offenses reported to police.

Tails of woe

Animal shelters in the Bosque-Erath-Hamilton tri-county area struggle to define the line between necessary, unnecessary euthanasia.

This 4-year-old female Persian, above left, was waiting to be adopted at the Erath County Humane Society, a kill shelter that says it has no choice but to euthanize unwanted animals. Gabe, a 3-year-old black Labrador Retriever-mix, stands a better chance of being adopted from the Bosque Animal Rescue Kennels, a no-kill shelter. Photos by Samantha Lee
