Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers the Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies (IS) as the degree leading to teacher certification at the elementary level of Early Childhood through Grade 6, at the middle level of Grades 4 through 8, and All Level Special Education. Through this degree, students obtain a broad based preparation in the academic areas that comprise the elementary school curriculum with a strong emphasis on language arts and reading. At the middle school level, certification areas include Generalist, Math, Science, Language Arts/Social Studies, and Math/Science. English as a Second Language (ESL) certification is included in the BS Interdisciplinary Studies degree with EC - 6, All Level Special Education, and Middle School certification except Math/Science.
Tarleton State University has a long and proud history in preparing future teachers and in graduate coursework in education. The Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Tarleton State University offers several options for obtaining a M.Ed. A culminating graduate project takes the place of comprehensive exams. Students are urged to research an area of interest or complete a special project. A three member graduate committee chosen by the student will guide the student through a 4-5 semester sequence in choosing, designing, implementing and presenting the research study or special project.
In 1999, the 75th Texas Legislature established the $36 million Master Reading Teacher (MRT) Program to support advanced training for reading educators and offer additional support in reading for all classroom teachers. The Master Reading Teacher Certificate is being implemented as part of the Texas Reading Initiative to ensure that all Texas students are reading on grade level by the end of the third grade and that their reading knowledge and skills grow throughout their public school careers.
Teacher Education is one of the major programs at Tarleton State University. It emphasizes broad general education as a foundation for mastery of teaching skills and specialized knowledge in an academic discipline. The primary purpose of teacher education is to prepare highly qualified teachers for Texas and the nation.
Formal application for admission to the Teacher Education Program should be made by the student during the first semester of the junior year while enrolled in EDU 320. Deadlines for applications are October 15, February 15 and June 15. Formal admission to this program shall be prerequisite to taking any professional development courses beyond EDU 320.
