Larry D. Barr, Assistant
Director
Assistant Planetarium Director Larry D. Barr comes from a varied background of music recording, live sound, communications and publishing. A sound engineer, radio announcer, former newspaper editor, electrician and self-confessed technology addict, he feels right at home amid all the hi-tech equipment in the Tarleton Science Planetarium. Larry is the former editor and publisher of "Energy Self Sufficiency Newsletter", owner and webmaster of Rebel Wolf Online, a site dedicated to alternative and renewable energy resources. He is also the founder and moderator of "12VDC Power", an email group for those devoted to the production and use of alternative energy sources, and a member of the Amateur Radio Relay League, a national organization for ham radio operators and the Tarleton Area Amateur Radio Club. He is also a Staff Advisor for the Tarleton Amateur Radio Club, which is the student ham club on campus. Larry's interests include: amateur radio (he holds an Amateur Extra class license -- callsign K5WLF), video production, classic country and Texas music, aviation, wolves and WWII warbirds. "There's just something," he says, "about the sound of those big radial engines." Currently, most of his time away from the 'dome' is spent researching and building renewable energy systems, participating in ham radio activities and working on his video and writing projects. He has convertied his amateur radio gear to operate on solar generated electricity and provides the "solar powered ham station" for local civic events and emergency deployment. "We are rapidly consuming our planet's supply of fossil fuels, and we're ruining our environment in the process," Larry believes. "It's time for us to develop sources of renewable and sustainable energy in order to continue our way of life." |
