AUSUSTE COMTE: FATHER OF SOCIOLOGY Auguste Comte first realized the need for a science of society while writing during the French Revolution, pictured below. These revolutionary days cried out for sociological analysis--to answer how and why such events occur. This is no different than today's need to understand 9-11, the Iraq War, Globialization, Family Changes, and any other social events about which you might be interested. Peter Berger said this about sociology: The sociological frame of reference, with its built-in procedure of looking for levels of reality other than those given in the official interpretations of society, carries with it a logical imperative to unmask the pretensions and the propaganda by which men cloak their actions with each other.
