Approval of Minutes and Treasurer’s Report President Howard called the November 11, 1997 meeting to order at 3:30 PM. The minutes of the September October 14, 1997, meeting were approved after it was noted that Pat Smith distributed the memo from Donna Strohmeyer to Pat Cude. Tim Brown, Carl Chumney, Clyde Stahnke, and Brian Whitecotten were absent. The secretary reported that the senate had $4538.16 in its account.
Dwayne Snider. As Director of Disability Services, Dr. Snider stated that he had been meeting with campus groups to discuss Disability Services and ADA compliance. He described his job as coordinating the entire campus effort to comply with ADA regulations. He also discussed what is meant by reasonable accommodation in terms of the approximately 80 students who his office works with. He emphasized that his office determines the legitimacy of students’ needs and that requests from his office to faculty are open to reasonable suggestions based on individual cases. He reported that Tarleton was working on projects in the following areas: sidewalk cuts, door openers, a van with a wheel-chair lift, and a new sidewalk to along Vanderbilt Street. The senate had questions on the following issues: types of tests recommended, criteria for recognizing diagnosticians, what constitutes reasonable accommodation and who determines that, and the faculty member’s time.
Academic Dishonesty Policy vote (Attachment B). Charles Howard pointed to changes in section III.A.2 of the policy and discussed the changes as a possible compromise position. After discussion, a motion passed to recommend the policy with the following changes and clarifications:
III.A.2. Faculty members will report cases of academic dishonesty to their department head and the department head will notify the academic dean. A copy of the violation report will also be forwarded to the Dean of Students and to the Office of Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.
III.A.3.c. A requirement to be administratively withdrawn from the course with the instructor being allowed to determine the grade of W or WF, when possible.
III.B. The senate requested clarification on the the last sentence of the first paragraph, in particular, why the Dean of Students was not designated as the only student service officer with sanction power.
Discussion of proposed Drop Policy (Attachment C). After some discussion, the senate agreed that we need a drop policy.
Calendar Recommendations Draft (Attachment D). A motion passed to send the recommendations to the Calendar Committee. A motion also passed that a system-wide calendar be considered.
Announcements. Charles Howard gave the senate a copy of the System’s Complaint and Appeal Procedures for Faculty Members Draft. He asked the senate to review the draft.
New Business. Misti Riebock asked why the mid-term grades had been cleared from the system database. It was recommended that she talk with Don Ross and Kim Roberts.
