Minutes of the Faculty Senate Meeting
May 11, 1999

 

Agenda Items:

 

1. Buffet Lunch

 In keeping with Senate tradition, the May meeting was set to conform to final exam schedules and began with a buffet lunch for senators and newly elected members. Twenty senators and new members were present.

 

2. Approval of Minutes and Treasurer's Report

 Upon motion of Bill Beaty, the minutes of the April meeting were approved as distributed. The Treasurer reported the Senate account unchanged from April.

 

3. Nomination and Election of Senate Officers for 1999-2000

 Dayton Hall nominated Gene Atkinson for President-elect for the academic year 1999-2000. On the motion of Bill Beaty nominations closed and Atkinson was selected by acclamation.

 Charles Howard nominated Bill Beaty for Secretary-Treasurer to fill the unexpired term of Atkinson. On motion of Dayton Hall, nominations closed and Beaty was selected by acclamation.

 

4. Introduction of Newly Elected Senators

 Following elections conducted in the affected departments, Charles Howard presented Teresa Davidian as the new senator from the Department of Fine Arts and Speech. Tim Brown introduced Les Waymack from the Department Of Animal Science. Roy Eller will be succeeded by Phil Sudman from the Department Of Biological Sciences. And Steve Simpson will fill the unexpired term of Amy Mckay from the Department of Health and Physical Education. The new senators from the Department of Math and Physics and from the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences have not yet been chosen. (Note: Subsequent to the Senate Meeting of May 11, Richard Winton was elected from Math and Carol Thompson from Physical Science.)

 

5. Selection of Senate Representation

 Appointed to represent the Faculty Senate on the EEO/AA Committee for 1999-2000 will be Dr. Teresa Davidian. Curriculum Committee representative will be Dr. Marilyn Robitaille. And Benefits Committee representative will be Mr. Rusty Freed.

 

6. Recommendations for University Committee Assignments

 The Senate Executive Committee presented recommendations for faculty appointments to university committees (lists were sent with agenda to individual senators). On motion of Bill Beaty the lists of recommendations were approved unanimously.

 

7. Summer Aerobics Program

 Amy McKay recalled that in the past the Senate has shared costs of the faculty/staff aerobics program with the Staff Council. The program runs through fall, spring and summer semesters. On motion of Richard Sale, the Faculty Senate will share equally with the Staff Council the costs of aerobics program for the next year. Motion passed without dissent.

 

8. Faculty Survey

 Linda Duncan collected the surveys from the various departments. Results will be tabulated when all surveys have been returned.

 

9. Parking Committee Report

 Charles Howard presented changes in university parking procedures. A $5 optional tag will allow remote parking but other fees will stay the same. Changes are recommended in the use of fines and in the appeals process. The report is attached to these minutes. Upon motion of Rosiere, the Faculty Senate endorses the recommendations of the Parking Committee. Motion passed unanimously.

 

10. University Calendar Committee Report

 The Calendar Committee has just about finished its work. Holly Lamb will have its report/recommendation soon and it will be attached to the agenda of the Faculty Senate in September. The Senate may choose to respond to the committee recommendations at that time.

 

11. Old Business

 Holly Lamb distributed the draft of a letter which is expected to be issued by the President shortly. The College of Arts and Sciences will be split, an interim dean appointed, searches conducted for permanent deans, departments reorganized, and some new department heads selected. On motion of Bill Beaty, the Faculty Senate will create a special task force to examine and comment upon the proposed changes. Charles Howard will chair the task force, which is open to volunteers and will begin its work as soon as possible.
