VI. Announcements
VII. Professional Development Program (Davidian)
A. The senate asked that this program be publicized more widely to faculty.
The PDP is designed in part to help currently employed faculty or staff who
are working towards an advanced degree; two faculty or staff are accepted to
the program each year. Some benefits: 1/4 release time, funds for departments
to hire an adjunct or pay overtime to another Tarleton faculty member, a more
convenient teaching schedule, etc. A new Web page for the PDP is nearing completion
and will be linked to the faculty senate Web page.
VIII. Other Announcements
A. President Davidian thanked the outgoing senators for their work on the Senate.
IX. University Committee Reports
A. Academic Council (Davidian)
The Faculty Grievance Policy and the Evaluation of Administrators should be
on the agenda in May.
B. Calendar Committee (Nelson)
The main focus of the Calendar committee has been finding additional slots for
more final exams. There have been several proposals advanced. 1. Change nothing
and cope the best as possible 2. Eliminate Dead Day and keep the final exam
length the same 3. Keep Dead Day and shorten the times for final exams. Most
senators and their departments favored the do nothing approach. No one favored
dropping Dead Day.
C. Regents Professor Search Committee (Jones)
TSU will not be submitting a candidate this year.
D. Faculty Survey (Davidian)
These were collected and will be compiled for use in the fall.
X. New Business
A. Online Syllabi – This is a student government project. Dr. Peer will
not require faculty to put their syllabi on-line. The documents are public and
SG could assemble them for the web. SG would like to have a Senate subcommittee
to meet with on this issue. Chris Guthrie, Alan Nelson, David Weissenburger,
and Bill Beatty will be the senate representatives to this subcommittee.
B. Employee Assistance Program (Jones)
There is at present no TSU Employee Assistance Program available. Texas A&M
does have a program which allows system components to develop such a program.
Angie Brown form Human Resources suggested such a policy a few years back. This
was turned down by administration which felt there was no need for such a policy.
C. Faculty Harassment (Winton)
Richard Winton asked if we should recommend a policy on how to deal with faculty
interactions in a hostile working environment. It was felt that such a policy
already exists.
D. Contracts (Whitley)
The question has been raised several times about whether TSU faculty have a
contract. A point was raised that we need to be careful if we pursue this, as
we want to be sure that we be contracted for professional services, not a set
number of hours per day.
Adjourn until September 2002
The meeting was adjourned at 12:40 PM
