- Approval of Minutes and Treasurer’s Report
President Howard called the February 10, 1998, meeting to order at 3:30 PM. The minutes of the January 13, 1998, meeting were approved. The secretary reported that the senate had $4332.80 in its account. Carl Chumney, Pat Smith, Clyde Stahnke, and Brian Whitecotton were absent. Mary Ann Block attended for Barbara Williams
Proposed Handbook Changes. After some discussion, motions passed to support both changes concerning promotion.
Discussion of Fall Break. Discussion centered on the following points. Fine Arts faculty thought a long weekend might be beneficial. Social Sciences faculty recommended a long weekend at the top of the week sometime during the semester. Lab scheduling difficulties would arise from any break. A motion passed to table the discussion indefinitely.
Discussion of Proposed Student Works Letter. Arthur Low summarized the senate’s concerns as expressed in the draft letter tentativley addressed to President McCabe. The letter focused on two concerns: hiring students to work at times that interfere with class attendance and allowing student workers to enter faculty offices unsupervised. The suggestion was made and accepted by the senate that these issues be informally discussed with President McCabe at the next opportunity. The discussion was tabled until after a meeting with the president.
Discussion of Department Head Evaluations. A new time line for the evaluation process was announced.
February 27: evaluations due in dean’s office.
March 6-April 3: appointment with Dean. Deadline for meeting with the dean, April 3.
April 10: evaluations go to VPAA
April 17: evaluations given to department head.
Announcements. All awards packets are due to Holly Lamb by February 27. She will distribute the appropriate materials to each senator before the March meeting.
New Business. Charles Howard re-emphasized that the senate still had funds available for senate-approved faculty travel. He also announced that a self-study steering committee had been formed.
