Syllabus

History 3063 covers the history of Britain from 1603 to the present.  Most of the material will be presented in class through lecture.  Your reading assignments will cover material that we do not cover in class.  Exams will test your ability to learn information and use that information to answer questions.  This class will also stress academic skills such as note taking and reading for comprehension.  Because I stress note taking, I do not allow tape recorders.  If you need help in this course, you will need to come by my office.  ADA students need to see me.

Texts:     Fraser, The History of Britain:  From the Romans to the Present:  A Narrative  ISBN: 0393060101

Absences:  You have 6 absences in this class.  These six should be used judiciously because on the seventh absence you have earned an F in the course for a lack of class participation.  Only university official functions are excused absences.  You must provide official university notification if your absence is an official university function.  If you miss class, you are responsible for getting the material that you missed.  If you miss an exam, you will have one opportunity to take a makeup exam.  I will set up the makeup exam day.  If you do not take a test either on the regularly scheduled day or on the makeup day, you will receive a zero for that exam.  A zero is not dropped when exam grades are averaged for this class at the end of the semester.  If you arrive late to class, you must tell me that you were in class at the end of that class period; I will not change absences after that time.

Grading:  Your final course grade will be determined by the following (if your absence record is 6 or less):
    1.  Two major exams
    2.  Comprehensive final at the end of the semester
Your semester exam average  is calculated as follows:  Your final exam is worth two major exams.  Your final exam grade is recorded twice in the grade book.  If your final exam grade is better than your lowest major exam grade, the lowest major exam grade will be dropped.  The final exam grade is not dropped under any circumstances.  If your final exam grade is your lowest grade, both major exam grades and the comprehensive final exam grades will be averaged together. If you miss an exam and do not take a makeup exam, you will receive a zero on that exam.  When I average grades at the end of the semester, I will not drop a zero.  Example :  Major Exam I Score 80   Major Exam II Score 85   Final Exam Score 90 which is recorded as two exam grades.  Major Exam I Score 80 dropped.  Exam average then calculated with Major Exam II Score 85 and Final Exam Scores 90 and 90.
The exams have changed.  You will take two exams:  mid-term and a final.  The final will not be comprehensive.  Your course grade will be based on the average of the two exams.

Grading scale: No curve will be used for any exam.  The standard ten-point scale will always determine your letter grade.
     100-90=A    89-80=B    79-70=C    69-60=D      59 or below =F

Exams:  Exams are essay, short answer identification, and maps.  You will be responsible for lectures and reading assignments.  These exams are designed to test what you have learned and how well you can use that information.  Exam dates will be announced two weeks in advance of the exam date.

Seating:  A seating chart will be used.
