Major General James H. Watkins
James H. Watkins was born on June 28, 1919 at San Saba, Texas. He attended San Saba schools, graduating from high school in 1936, where he lettered in five sports. After high school, he attended John Tarleton A&M (now Tarleton State University) where he studied engineering, played football, ran track, was business manager of the year book, and was selected as the outstanding student in mathematics. After Tarleton, MG Watkins went to the University of Texas for one semester prior to going to the U.S. Military Academy in June, 1940. While at the Academy, he played football, took flight training, and was vice-president of his class. MG Watkins received his wings and a commission as a Second Lieutenant on June 1, 1943.
After his graduation from West Point, he fought World War II in B-17's in North Africa and Europe (from Italy). MG Watkins flew 50 combat missions and participated in the first shuttle of American bombers to the Soviet Union in June 1944.
MG Watkins is married to Kathleen Collum, who is a 1941 graduate of John Tarleton A&M. They have four children: Michael G., Janet, James C., and Robert D.
