Publications/Web Policies, Procedures and Graphic Standards
(does not include student publications or academic publications)

The Office of Publications and Graphic Design provides publication services in an effort to ensure a positive and consistent graphic identity for Tarleton in keeping with the University's advancement and marketing concerns. These services include concept, design, estimates and consultation, production supervision, and photography for use in promotional materials, as well as assistance with adapting printed material for the Internet. The office is a support entity for the whole University.

All printed publications intended for external audiences must be coordinated through and produced by the Office of Publications and Graphic Design. For assistance or approval call x9422.

Please allow six weeks (initial consultation to printed piece) for brochures, posters and other publications requiring design and copywriting.

By State law, all jobs printed off campus must be competitively bid and will be coordinated through the senior publications editor in the publications office.

All Web pages must be approved by Web Services (x9713) to check for State, American Disability Act and Tarleton compliance.

Graphic Standards and Visual Identity

To ensure graphic integrity, authorized vendors and organizations who need to reproduce the official logo and other official graphics must obtain authority for mechanical or digital source material from the Office of Publications and Graphic Design rather than attempt to recreate graphic material or copy from the Internet. Images should not be disproportionately scaled. Stretching digital graphics horizontally or vertically in a computer application results in distortion that denigrates the proportions of the design. Scale graphics proportionately by locking the aspect ratio or holding down the shift key while dragging a corner resize handle. Be aware that scaling graphics can affect the resulting resolution. Graphic elements should always contain enough resolution to image without discernable pixels (the square mosaic-like tiles which make up digital images) on the output device (printer or monitor).

University Name

“Tarleton State University” should be spelled out on first reference in publication text. Thereafter, “Tarleton” or “the University” may be used.

Tarleton State University should not be referred to or be presented as “Tarleton State,” “Tarleton University,” or “TSU.” The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board uses TSU when referring to Texas Southern University in Houston and Southwest Texas State University is changing their name effective Sept. 1, 2003 to Texas State University-San Marcos. Although the official abbreviated version of their name will be Texas State, there will be some who will refer to them as TSU as well as create t-shirts, mugs and so forth, possibly causing confusion. We want to emphasize our heritage by enhancing our John Tarleton roots.

University Colors

The official colors of Tarleton are purple and white. The Tarleton purple should match PANTONE Matching System (PMS) solid (spot) color 268 as closely as possible. Because PMS solid colors are guides for mixing ink, paint, and other pigments, they can only be approximated in process-color (four-color) printing and on Web pages.

The process-color formula which most closely matches PMS 268 is 88% cyan, 100% magenta, 15% yellow, and 5% black (assuming a 150-line screen). The Web-safe color that most closely matches PMS 268 is HTML #330066 (51R 0G 102B).

This policy is on hold. For more information, contact Nancy Pricer.

University Seal

Use of the Tarleton seal is highly restricted. Its use is confined to the following documents: diplomas and certificates evidencing completion of degree requirements and/or courses of study; all transcripts of grades earned for completion of course work; and all contracts and documents which require the signature of the president and/or other responsible University officers which involve legal, ceremonial or financial transactions, if such documents require a seal. Use of the seal as a design element on pamphlets, brochures, other printed pieces, and on novelty items and apparel is discouraged and approval from the Office of the President is required.

Intercollegiate Athletic Symbols

All externally-targeted printed materials for intercollegiate athletics must be presented to Tarleton’s NCAA compliance coordinator through the sports information director (x9077). All intercollegiate athletics publications must be approved by the Office of Publications and Graphic Design.

When limited to one color, symbols should be printed in purple (PMS 268) or black.

Licensing privileges of the intercollegiate athletics symbols for off-campus use should be referred to the the associate vice president for the Division of Finance and Administration (x9877) and the vice president for the Division of Institutional Advancement (9890).
