Teaching Certification Track
All high school graduates must have a basic knowledge in physics at the conceptual level if they are understand the technical issues that confront society (energy, pollution, etc) and compete for jobs in the 21st Century. Texas presently faces a shortage of qualified high school physics teachers. This problem will only become more acute in the coming year as the State begins implementing that every student graduating on the Recommended High School Plan take Physics. Physics department faculty are heavily involved in teacher preparation in a variety of ways including involvement in Physics Education Research, in providing teacher workshops in inquiry and other teaching techniques to existing science teachers, and as members of the Texas Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers.
Tarleton has two physics teacher certification programs to prepare students for teaching certification as a high school physics teacher depending on the student's teaching interest. Each track includes a firm foundation in physics along with additional course work in either chemistry or math as a secondary teaching field and additional course work in education with a teaching practicum.
