When checking the
libraries' collections for items you want, you should first search the libraries'
catalog. In addition, you may need to search jake, an online database, to determine
if a specific journal, magazine, or newspaper is offered fulltext in a database.
Both of these searches are explained in more detail below.
If after performing the appropriate searches, you determine that the item you
need is not available in the libraries' collections or databases, you should then
use one of the three services offered by the libraries, which are explained in
the "Types of Requests" section below.
Search the Libraries' Catalog: The libraries'
catalog contains
records for all items (books, periodicals, videos, CDs, newspapers, etc.) in the
libraries' collections; therefore, you should always search it for the item you
need.
Since you will know the item's title (otherwise you wouldn't be able to request
it from another library), use the catalog's title
search, which is the best search strategy to use when you know
the title of a book, movie, CD, journal, newspaper, etc. and you have
an article citation and want to know if the periodical (journal, magazine,
or newspaper) in which the article appears is in the collection.
If you need books or media items (CDs, videos, etc.) that can't be found using
the libraries' catalog, you'll need to use one of the borrowing services discussed
in the "Types of Requests" section. However,
if you're looking for articles in specific periodicals and are unable to find
them in the libraries' catalog, you need to search jake before requesting the
articles from another library. The next section explains this process.
Search jake to Locate Periodicals: In addition
to searching the catalog for specific periodicals, you should also search the
online database called jointly administered knowledge environment (jake
for short), which was created at the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library at Yale University.
This free online database is used to find
out which databases index or contain full-text articles from specific periodicals
and to expand
journal abbreviations (for example, to
find out that the abbreviation Engl Hist Rev stands for English Historical
Review)
For more information about searching jake and using it to locate periodicals in
the libraries' databases, use the following link: search
jake to locate periodicals
If you need articles that can't be found using jake, you'll need to use one of
the borrowing services discussed in the "Types of Requests"
section.
TYPES
OF REQUESTS:
Division Exchange, Interlibrary Loan, and TexShare
Items that are not
available through your local Tarleton library's collection may be obtained in
three different ways: Division
Exchange (for items in a Tarleton library, but not the one on your
campus) Interlibrary
Loan (for items not found in either Tarleton library's collection
or databases) TexShare
(for items housed in participating libraries' collections)
Division
Exchange: If the library on the Tarleton campus where you attend classes
does not have an item you need and the other Tarleton library does, you can request
a Division Exchange and get the item brought to your campus. This process takes
one to two days. Details

Interlibrary Loan: If neither library
has the item you want (physically or electronically), you can obtain the item
using the libraries' interlibrary loan services. Interlibrary loan items are delivered
to your campus and usually arrive within one to three weeks. You can also obtain
a TexShare card to obtain or access items directly from participating libraries. Details

TexShare: If neither library has the item
you want, you may be able to obtain it from libraries participating in the TexShare
program. Member libraries include public libraries that belong to the regional
library systems, academic libraries, and libraries of clinical medicine. TexShare
enables libraries to offer a broader range of materials and services than any
single library can provide for its constituents. The TexShare card program is
designed to allow registered users from participating institutions to directly
borrow materials from the libraries of other participating institutions. Details
