JOURNAL LOCATOR & CITATIONS |

SFX Journal Locator
is an online tool that
| |
indicates
if periodicals are available full text in databases to
which Tarleton libraries subscribe, |
| |
creates
shortcuts to full text articles, and |
| |
automatically
searches the library catalog for specific periodicals. |
|
This tool can be activated in three ways:
| |
use the SFX Journal Locator interface, |
| |
follow SFX links in database search results, and |
| |
browse the online journals list in SFX. |
Since
all three approaches to using this tool ultimately yield the same
results, only one approach is explained below: using the SFX Journal
Locator interface.
HOW
TO BEGIN "TRACKING DOWN" ARTICLES
The example
citation used to illustrate how to locate articles with the SFX Journal
Locator and citation information is
| |
Green,
Thad B. "An Empirical Analysis of Nominal and Interacting
Groups." Academy of Management Journal, 18:1, March
1975: 63-74. |
| 1. |
Use
the "periodical title" search option in SFX Journal
Locator to see if the periodical is available in databases to
which Tarleton libraries subscribe. |
| -- |
Click
"Research by Topic" on the library home page. |
| -- |
Click
the "SFX Journal Locator" link in the bulleted
list at the top of the "Research by Topic" page. |
 |
| |
Note
that SFX has several search options.
However, you should use the journal title search first because
it is a more efficient method than using the article information
search. |
| -- |
Type
academy of management journal in the journal title search
box. |
| |
You
can also use the ISSN as a search term. A periodical's library
catalog record often lists its ISSN. |
| -- |
Click
"Search." |
| 2. |
Look
at the SFX search results page. |
Only
one SFX record matched the periodical's title.
The SFX record for a periodical offers a wealth of information
as indicated in this labeled image.
Explanations of the labeled portions of this SFX record are
given below. |

TOP
"Database
links"
| |
shows that the periodical is available in Tarleton libraries'
databases and
-- It is in JSTOR Business Collection and EBSCO's Business Source
Premier.
-- Use the links to search for the periodical in each database. |
| |
states which years of the periodical are available in the databases.
-- Gives a quick indication if desired years are available.
In this example, both databases cover 1975, which is the year
sought. |
"Catalog
link"
| |
runs a search in the Tarleton libraries' catalog to see if the
periodical is available in the libraries' collections.
-- Searching for the periodical directly from the catalog interface
(discussed on the previous page) is also recommended. |
"Reference help"
| |
lets researchers access the AskNow virtual reference service.
-- AskNow, a chat-based online reference service, is a pilot
project between selected libraries of the Texas A&M University
System. |

HOW
TO CONTINUE "TRACKING DOWN" ARTICLES
Once you've
determined that the periodical is available in Tarleton libraries'
databases by reading the information in the SFX search results record,
you have several options for obtaining the article in print or electronic
format, as explained below.
| |
To
obtain an online version of the article, "An Empirical
Analysis of Nominal and Interacting Groups" from the March
1975, volume 18 issue #1 of Academy of Management Journal,
you have these options: |
| |
Use
the links in the SFX record to search the indicated databases
(in this case, JSTOR and/or Business Source Premier). |
| |
Go directly to the
indicated databases and search for the article using periodical
title, author, and/or article title. |
| |
Use
Internet search tools to locate the periodical's home page and
see if archives are available. |
| |
Search
for the periodical in the library catalog to see if it's in
the collection and if the record offers links to online versions. |
| |
To obtain a printed version of the article, you
have these options: |
| |
Search
the library catalog to see if the periodical is available, which
it is. |
| |
If you attend classes on the Stephenville campus, submit
a request to the Periodicals Department at Dick Smith Library
to have the March 1975 issue of Academy of Management Journal
brought to the library from offsite storage. |
| |
If
you attend classes on the Killeen campus, submit an
interlibrary loan request (see Unit 9) to have the article sent
to your library. |
| |
If
you qualify for the libraries' distance learning services,
you can request document delivery (home/office delivery of materials).
Unit 9 offers more information about library services for distance
learners. |
| |
If
the SFX Journal Locator and library catalog have no records
for the periodical or if the years of coverage do not match
the need, you should: |
| |
Use
Internet search tools to locate the periodical's home page and
see if archives are available. |
| |
Submit
an interlibrary loan request (see Unit 9) to obtain the article
from another library. |
