Frequently Asked Questions

Are Fraternities just like those on TV and in movies?

Every fraternity is different and unique.  Tarleton State prides itself on hosting many fraternities, each with their own characteristics and personalities.  The images portrayed in the movies and on TV shows do not reflect those attitudes at Tarleton State.

Don't Fraternities take up alot of time?

Fraternity membership requires many hours a week.  Whether it be a community service project, planning an event, or regular weekly meetings, members have learned to manage their time wisely with other commitments such as schoolwork, a job, and significant others.  This is why so many members have succeeded in their lives.

Aren't Fraternities expensive?

Annual membership dues vary in prices per semester.  This cost is used to pay for the community service, scholarships, intramurals, and many of the social events offered throughout the semester.  The fraternities are easy to work with on a certain dues schedule if needed.  But as far as being expensive, No because the skills acquired from being in a fraternity are well worth it.

What is Recruitment?

Recruitment is the time when Fraternities seek and recruit new members.  The recruitment events are at different times and days.  Recruitment is a time when students have an opportunity to visit the groups and see what each has to offer.

If I go through Recruitment, do I have to join?

No.  Recruitment is a time to see what Fraternity life can offer you.  Going through Recruitment and its functions does not commit you to joining.

What does Greek really mean?

Membership in a greek letter organization is a lifetime commitment.  Choosing the Greek community means working with a group of men or women who can exchange and stand for common goals and ideas while being held to a higher standard that other college students.  The Greek experience during the college years is a gateway to many rewards and connections later in life.

Each of our chapters develop a special bond often called brotherhood, which is nurtured through common work, laughter, service projects, intramurals, and the shared success and frustractions of all.  Throughout the student's life, membership will be an unwritten bond of friendship no matter what course his life takes.

What is a Fraternity?

A fraternity is a group of men bound together by brotherhood, common goals and aspirations.  The members that form a fraternity share their efforts, friendship, and knowledge.  Togther these members learn, grow and make the fraternity stronger.  Their common experience builds ties that last a lifetime.  This forms a brotherhood amongst members which helps to develop strong and creative leadership, leading to success.

Though there are many different Fraternities, they all share common founding principles.  Fraternities enhance your educational experience by emphasizing intellectual, interpersonal, and social development.  The ideals of lifelong friendship, sound education, campus and community service and social interaction are what fraternity members strive to live by every day.
