Individual Counseling:

In individual counseling, you can receive help for any social, emotional, or educational issues they choose. You will have the full attention of one of our staff members in a one-to-one atmosphere of understanding, warmth, and insight. And, it’s a conversation with and for you – what you think, what you feel, what you need, and what you choose for your life. Your counselor can be an excellent sounding board, compassionate listener, and skillful expert in problems of living.

Sessions typically last 50 minutes once each week or every other week. The number of sessions varies, depending on your goals.

Group Counseling:

Remember group therapy in the old Bob Newhart show, the one where he was a psychologist? Maybe you have seen group therapy portrayed in movies, where group members are destructive and lash out at one another. Many people form a poor impression about group from what they see in the media. The truth is that group therapy is much more than just a bunch of people sitting around feeling awful. It is a supportive and stimulating environment for personal development, relationship building, and skill improvement. The great advantage of group is that you can not only count on the expertise of the psychologist or counselor who facilitates the group, you can also give and receive valuable understanding, support and advice from others who share similar struggles.

Typical groups cover such themes as learning to be assertive, improving body image, eating disorders, relationships, mind-body wellness and chronic pain management. Each group usually runs for 1.5 hours once per week, and are scheduled to accommodate the majority of group members. You will never be required or pressured to disclose anything you do not wish to discuss. If you don’t see a group you would like to have offered, please contact us at 968-9044 and make a request. We are always open to suggestions.

Couples Counseling:

Change, conflict and adjustment are a part of every close relationship; and so is communication. Counseling can help you understand and improve a troubled relationship or enhance an already good one.

Couples may seek marital, premarital, divorce, sexual adjustment, alternative life-style counseling or counseling to improve friendships. Services are available to the student and her or his partner or friend. Only one party must be a Tarleton student to qualify for services.

Sessions typically last for 50 minutes and are scheduled once per week, or every other week, depending on your needs and schedule.

Family Counseling:

The demands of combining student and family life can be hard to manage. Issues between parents and children, single parents, blended or step families and high family expectations are commonly addressed in family counseling. As with couples counseling, only one member of the family needs to be a Tarleton student; however, the student must accompany the family member(s). Sessions typically last for 50 minutes and are scheduled once per week, or every other week, depending on your needs and schedule.

Wait List:

During particularly busy times of the semester, we may be unable to schedule you with a counselor immediately after your intake appointment. At the time of intake we will try to inform you as accurately as possible how long you may have to wait for a counselor at the SCC. If you wish, we will also review other options for you, such as referral to other agencies on campus, community mental health agencies, and private practice counselors.
