The Richard T. Shigley Criminal Justice Scholarship

A native of Nebraska, Dr. Shigley received his Doctor of Education from Montana State University in 1979. After teaching and administrative positions at Bemidji State University in Minnesota, Kearney State College in Nebraska, and Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Dr. Shigley joined the faculty at Tarleton State University in 1994 as Associate Professor and Director of Criminal Justice. He went on to serve as Head of the Department of Social Work, Sociology and Criminal Justice from 1996 to 2000. He later wrote and received a grant for the creation of the Center for Rural School Safety in Granbury, Texas where he served as Director until his retirement. Dr. Shigley was a student favorite and great colleague for the faculty in his department. He is fondly remembered for his leadership,  jovial personality, and love of students.

Following the untimely, recent death of Dr. Richard T. Shigley, Ms. Kelli Styron is requesting funds for a newly created scholarship in memory and honor of Dr. Shigley. Tax deductible donations can be made to the Richard T. Shigley Memorial Scholarship at Tarleton; as well, donations can be made during the Annual Fund Drive.  Ms. Styron hopes that we can award the Richard T. Shigley Memorial Scholarship in fall of 2008 to worthy students, with an overall 3.2 grade point average and a 3.5 in criminal justice.  The Department wishes to offer our continued condolences to Sharlene Shigley, who works for the Texas Institute for Applied Environmental Research (TIER) on our campus.
