MARINE BIOLOGY AT TARLETON STATE UNIVERSITY
A Bachelor of Science degree in biology with a marine emphasis is now
available from Tarleton State University. The marine biology program is offered
in cooperation with Texas A&M University at Galveston. All basic coursework is
taken on the Tarleton campus with summer coursework and research projects
available from Galveston.
THE CURRICULUM
In addition to the general university requirements for graduation, students
take courses in general biology, microbiology, heredity, invertebrate zoology,
ecology, introduction to marine biology, marine ecology, biostatistics, physical
geology, oceanography, physics and chemistry through organic. Science electives
at the Tarleton campus may be selected from a variety of related fields
including: paleontology, limnology, parasitology, Ichthyology, physiology, and
environmental science. It is recommended that at least 6 hours of advanced
biology electives be marine courses taken at Texas A&M University at Galveston
or another marine science laboratory. These courses will normally be taken
during the summer between the junior and senior years. Qualified students may
also take graduate coursework in marine science at Galveston prior to their
admission to A&M's graduate marine biology program.FINANCIAL
AID
A number of grants, work programs, loans and scholarships are offered through
the University. Dick Smith Scholarships are available for incoming freshmen,
transfers, and returning students who are enrolled in the College of Science and
Technology. Applications and additional information can be obtained on-line from
the Scholarship Office. The
Presidential Honors Program offers exceptional opportunities for outstanding
students and includes a four-year scholarship. Contact

Full-time and part-time teaching assistantships are available for qualified
graduate students in the MS and Master of Science Teaching program. Research
assistantships may also be available depending on the student's specialization
and types of externally funded research.
THE UNIVERSITY & FACILITIES
Tarleton State University is part of the Texas A&M University System and is
located on a 125-acre campus in Stephenville, 65 miles southwest of Fort Worth.
Stephenville is a rural community with a population of over 15,000. Tarleton is
one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in Texas. It was founded in
1899 on the present main campus site as a privately endowed school known as John
Tarleton College. It became part of what is now called the Texas A&M University
System in 1917. The name was changed to Tarleton State University in 1973.
