FRESHWATER BIOLOGY PROGRAM

AT TARLETON STATE UNIVERSITY

Tarleton State University offers a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology with a freshwater emphasis. Besides the University core curriculum requirements, students complete courses in chemistry through organic, physical geology, environmental science, physics, general biology, microbiology, heredity,  invertebrate zoology, vertebrate survey, plant taxonomy, ecology, and limnology.  Biology electives may be chosen from a variety of biology courses such as:  introduction to marine biology, marine ecology, parasitology,  animal and plant physiology.  Electives are also offered in basic hydrology, field techniques in environmental science, and various geosciences and chemistry courses.

Students complete a minimum of 128 hours exclusive of physical education.  Thirty-six hours must be advanced courses (3000-4000 level).

A Master of Science degree is offered in Biology with an aquatic environmental emphasis.  There is a thesis and non-thesis  option.

IDENTIFYING BOTTOM FAUNA FROM THE BOSQUE RIVER IN STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS

Associated with Tarleton State University is the Texas Institute for Applied Environmental Research (TIAER).  The institute is especially concerned with water pollution problems in Texas and policies to reduce stream contamination.  They employ biologists, chemists, and individuals well versed in environmental law.   Locally they are involve in studying non-point sources of organic loading in area lakes and the Bosque River.  The Institute has employed biology students on a part-time basis and some of their permanent employs were Tarleton graduates in the freshwater biology program.  Many of our graduates are currently employed with the TNRCC and various consulting firms that deal with environmental assessments.
