FTP Password Requirements and Guidelines

Your security is of the utmost importance to Tarleton State University. You should keep in mind the following requirements and guidelines (from Procedure 24.99.99.T1.10 Information Resources –Password Authentication) when creating a password for any application or account you are using.

Note: When you apply for a web account, the password you choose is checked against the following requirements and guidelines. Read these requirements and guidelines carefully as we will refuse your request for a web account until your password is in compliance.

Passwords must:

  1. Be between 8 and 14 characters,
  2. Contain at least 1 digit,
  3. Contain upper and lowercase letters,
  4. Follow the remaining guidelines listed below.

Overused Passwords

Your password should not include any overused pass phrases or words.

Examples you should not use:

  • LetMeIn!
  • TSU1899
  • password
  • purplepoo

Name / User Name

Your password should not include your name or your username.

Examples you should not use:

  • st_username
  • st_jdoe
  • johndoe

Relationships

Your password should not include names of family, friends, co-workers, organizations, etc.

Examples you should not use:

  • chrislaura2011
  • deltachi5260
  • pankus123

School Spirit

Your password should not include your school, school mascot, your major, or any words recognizable as related to Tarleton Traditions.

Examples you should not use:

  • tarletontexans
  • texanrider
  • purplepoo
  • chemistry
  • oscarp
  • tsu1899

Important Dates

Your password Should not include birthdays, weddings, graduations, or any other significant dates in your life.

Examples you should not use:

  • dream1899
  • grad2012
  • 05142012

Important Numbers

Your password SHOULD not include phone numbers, license plate numbers, UID, UIN, or SSN.

Examples you should not use:

  • 000123456
  • TXN-RIDR
  • 464112222

Addresses

Your password should not include your current or any previous addresses you may have had.

Examples you should not use:

  • 1333wash
  • washingtonst
  • stephenville

Patterns

Your password should not include word or number patterns.

Examples you should not use:

  • qwerty123
  • 123321aa
  • aabbccddeeff

Backwards

Your password SHOULD not be any of the previously referenced items spelled backwards.

Examples you should not use:

  • notelratnhoj
  • oopelprup
  • 321ytrewq
