Grades 8-12

Coursework within most degrees prepares applicants with the necessary hours and content knowledge to be able to pursue certification in grades 8-12 and to pass the appropriate TExES content exam within their major, if the major is an offered certification area. To be considered academically prepared, your certification area must meet the number of semester hours (sh) required for the content area and have at least a 2.75 grade point average (GPA) and no grade lower than a "C."
Most certification areas at this level start with the common core requirement of 24 hours in the subject matter you want to teach with 12 of those hours being upper level: e.g., junior, senior, or graduate level. The certification areas in grades 8-12 are listed below and the coursework needed to qualify is linked. If you don’t see your certification area here, be sure to check Grades 6-12 and EC-12 Content Areas Academic Qualification links.
