Graduate Programs
Tarleton State University has a long and proud history in preparing future teachers and in graduate coursework in education.
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Tarleton State University offers several options for obtaining a M.Ed.
A culminating graduate project takes the place of comprehensive exams. Students are urged to research an area of interest or complete a special project. A three member graduate committee chosen by the student will guide the student through a 4-5 semester sequence in choosing, designing, implementing and presenting the research study or special project.
All Masters Degrees in Education in Curriculum and Instruction (C & I) require a minimum of 36 semester hours.*
Core courses required of most emphasis areas include:
- EDU 501 (Readings in Professional Development),
- EDU 502 (Educational Sociology),
- EDU 504 (Human Development),
- EDU 598 (Educational Research),
- EDU 538 (Curriculum Design and Implementation), and
- EDU 586 (3) (Seminars for Graduate Project).
*Certification may include additional requirements.

A Word About Some of Our Programs
Diagnostician - M.Ed. in C & I with Diagnostician emphasis can lead to certification as a diagnostician.
Reading Specialist - M.Ed. in C & I with Reading Specialist emphasis can lead to certification as a Professional Reading Specialist or Master Reading Teacher.
Teacher Leadership - M.Ed. in C & I with Teacher as Leader emphasis includes coursework in supervision and leadership to produce campus leaders and change agents.
Special Education - M.Ed. in C & I with Special Education emphasis can prepare you to take the TExES in special education for certification
Gifted and Talented - M.Ed. in C & I with an emphasis in Gifted and Talented can lead to an G/T supplement.
Secondary or Elementary Education - M.Ed. in C & I with an emphasis in elementary or secondary provides an opportunity to gain instructional strategies and content area mastery. The secondary emphasis may require 18 hours in graduate academic content areas that prepare for dual enrollment courses.
