Bright Endowed Scholarship was established by Frances Allen in 1971 in memory of her parents.

Paul & Opal Cunyus Scholarship
Amount: Typical Award $1000 per academic year

Criteria: Freshman recipients must demonstrate financial need, must complete admission application and obtain acceptance to Tarleton, must pass all parts of the TASP (now THEA) test, must be a Fine Arts, Education, and/or Horticulture major. Upper division recipients must demonstrate academic performance (minimum GPA of 2.75), must show financial need, show involvement in leadership training and extra curricular activities, and must be a Fine Arts, Education, and/or Horticulture major. Established in December 1995 by Mr. Paul Cunyus and family. Mr. Cunyus came to Tarleton in the early 1920s from his home in East Texas. He completed two years at John Tarleton Agriculture College majoring in Agriculture. Upon graduation he transferred to Texas A&M, where he received his bachelor and master degrees. After World War II he returned to Tarleton as the associate dean and served in that capacity for 25 years. He retired in the early 1970s. Mr. Cunyus passed away in 1996. His wife, Opal, preceded him in death.

Criteria: Part I recipient must be in the top 25% of his/her graduating class, must have at least 1000 on the SAT or 23 on the ACT, must complete an application form which includes an essay on why they want to be a teacher, and must meet all of Tarleton’s admission requirements. Part II recipient must meet teacher certification requirements, must have completed one semester after being accepted into the certification program and must be majoring in mathematics or chemistry.

Sally Boyd Teaching Endowment

Criteria: Recipient must be a graduate student pursuing a degree in either education, a professional certificate, or a professional development experience, must show: 1. leadership potential. 2. quality and work experience (teaching and or administration). 3. express a sense of humor. 4. show financial need. Established in August 1989 by Drs. James and Veleda Boyd. The scholarship honors Dr. Boyd's mother, Sally Boyd, a strong believer in the value of education in the lives of young people. The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage instructional leaders in the public schools of Texas and recognize their career commitment.

If there is not a graduating senior enrolling at Tarleton State University who meets the criteria, a Coleman County student who meets the criteria who is currently enrolled may be awarded the scholarship.
