STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Ted and Julia Wheeler, from Cross Plains, were on campus Oct. 29 to sign an official gift agreement with Tarleton to establish the Lee Wayne Wheeler Scholarship in memory of their son.

Lee Wayne Wheeler was a senior agriculture major at Tarleton when he died in a car accident in 2001.

“We’re doing it because Lee Wayne liked Tarleton so much,” said Julia Wheeler. “I think he would like to have us remember him in a positive way. I think he’d like for us to remember him by giving to someone else.

“Tarleton was a good place for him and our daughter who went there,” she added. “It was our family school.”

“This is a great tribute to your son,” President F. Dominic Dottavio said during the signing ceremony. “It’s a remarkable and wonderful tribute to someone who meant a great deal to you, and it will now mean something in a meaningful way to future generations of students that are able to receive this scholarship in his memory.”

The endowment of $10,000 will generate $500 per year for scholarships. Recipients must be full-time students majoring in an agricultural field who have a demonstrated financial need.
